CLOSE READING How do you know? Cite specific evidence in the text.

angel.

· Identify the
speaker’s age, gender,
class, and education.

The speaker's age,

gender, class, and
education were not
specifically being
mentioned in the text.
However, we can
assume that the
speaker is already an
adult and a male.
Education and class
are hard to determine
because the speaker is
a statue.

· The voice tells the

story. Whose voice is
being heard within the
text?

The voice being heard

in the text is the
narrator's voice which
is the statue himself.

· What can you tell or

what do you know
about the speaker that
helps you understand
the point of view
expressed?

Personally, I
understood the point of
view of the speaker
through using my
religious background. I
am a Roman Catholic,
and as part of our
belief we are also
known for involving
images, relics, icons,
and statues as we pray.
This is not because we
are practicing idolatry
but it helps us to focus
on an aspect of praying
to out God Almighty
above that sometimes
misunderstood by
others. Just like all
people who offers their
prayers and intentions
to God through the
statue, he himself also
wants to talk to God
but he cannot due to
his broken wings.

that influenced the text ➢
during its composition
except his memories
when he was still in
Santa Fe and went into
a Spanish Market
where "saint-makers"
were selling religious
figures.

· Is this a political
event, a celebration, an
observation, a critique,
or …?

It is somehow both an
observation and an
exploration of the
poet's roots. It help
Dana to recall and
explore the part of his
background more as
well as his main
religion Latin Catholic
in which he had been
raised.

· Identify the context

of the text.

In an Authorial context
perspective, the piece
is a lyric poem. Though
most readers depict his
works as entirely
personal and
autobiographical but
Dana is actually fond of
writing fictional
characters in his works
because he believed
that through this, he
can easily tell the truth.
Another thing, the poet
composed the text
using his religious
background and also
influenced by his own
experiences.
A Who is the Who are the readers to ➢
Audience? whom this piece is
directed? It may be one
person or a specific
group.

This piece is directed

to all believers,
especially the Catholic
believers.

· Does the speaker

specify an audience?

According to the poet

himself, this text is
meant for the alert, the
curious, and the
creative.

· What assumptions
exist in the text about
the intended audience?

We can assume that

the poet intends to
dedicate this to all
believers who seek
help upon connecting
to good. it reminds us
that as we pray,
somebody is listening;
and it also reveals the
feelings of other
people who considers
themselves as godless
person.

P What is the •What is the purpose

Purpose? behind the text? Why
did the author write it?
What is his goal? (To
find the purpose, ask,
“What did the author
want his audience to
think or do as a result
of reading this text?”)

The purpose behind “I stood beside a gilded altar were

the text is to expose The hopeless offered God their misery”
real-life scenarios “I heard their women whispering at my feet—
such as beliefs, Prayers for the lost, the dying, and the dead”
people’s misery, and “When troops were sent to vandalize the chapel.
doomed on Earth. They hit me once—almost apologetically.”

• What is the
message?

The text portrays a

sad message that
was presented by an
angel who thought “There are so many things I must tell God!
that God has The howling of the dammed can’t reach so high.
forgotten about him But I stand like a dead thing nailed to a perch,
and wouldn’t forgive A crippled saint against a painted sky.”
for the bad he had
done.

• How does the

speaker convey this
message?

The speaker conveys

this message
through the
representation of the
angel with a broken
wing.

S What is the •What topic, content,

Subject? and ideas are included
in the text?

The poem talks about

an angel who desires “There are so many things I must tell God!
to reach God and The howling of the dammed can’t reach so high.
inform Him of the But I stand like a dead thing nailed to a perch,
doomed-on Earth, A crippled saint against a painted sky.”
but it seems heavy,
as if nailed to a
perch, and the angel
with a damaged wing
is unable to fly.

• State the subject in a

few words or a short
phrase.
“I am the Angel with the Broken Wing,
The author presents The one large statue in this quiet room.
the subject The staff finds me too fierce, and so they shut
immediately as seen Faith’s ardor in this air-conditioned tomb.”
in the first stanza.

• Is there more than

one subject?

• How does the author

present the subject?
Does he introduce it
immediately or do you,
the reader, have to
make an inference?

Tone What is the • What is the attitude of

Tone? the author?

• Is the author
emotional, objective,
neutral, or biased
about this topic?

As a reader, I felt that “There are so many things I must tell God!
the author is The howling of the dammed can’t reach so high.
emotional as I think But I stand like a dead thing nailed to a perch,
the message of this A crippled saint against a painted sky.”
poem reflects on her
real-life experience.

• What types of details

“tell” the author’s
feelings about the
topic?
“I heard their women whispering at my feet—
The details that the Prayers for the lost, the dying, and the dead.
author feels about Their candles stretched my shadow up the wall,
the topic can be seen And I became the hunger that they fed.”
directly in one of the “There are so many things I must tell God!
stanzas. The howling of the dammed can’t reach so high.
But I stand like a dead thing nailed to a perch,
A crippled saint against a painted sky.”

• What types of diction

(choice of words),
syntax (sentence
structure), and imagery
(metaphors, similes,
and other types of
figurative language)
help reflect the tone?

The type of diction it

used was informal
diction as it is more
conversational. This
informal jargon is
symbolic of how
people talk in real
life, allowing the
author to create more
realistic characters.

• How would you read

the passage aloud if
you were the author?

If I were the author,

I’d read it aloud
through thinking as I
were the subject of
the poem. Just as it
depicts, to really read
it emotionally as the
mood of this poem
was sad all the way
through it.
