Philipp Friedrich BOddecke Ue) Universal Sonata sopra «La Monica» Fagott fir Fagott und Basso continuo Edition Universal Sonata sopra «La Monica» Bassoon for Bassoon and Basso Continuo Edition Universal Edition UE 121290 Pretace Philipp Friedrich Boddecker, born in 1607, started his career, 8 “fagottist” at the court of Darmstadt, where he worked nti! 1634; after successive posts as organist at Frankfurt, and Strasbourg he was in 1651 appointed choir-master in Stuttgart, where he remained until his death in 1683. His ‘Sonata sopra la Monica. Fagotto solo, the first solo for the instrument to be published outside italy, appeared together with a sonata for violin at the end of a collection of religious choral works entitled Sacra Partitura published in Stras- bourg in 1651. Sot with figured bass continuo, it is in the form of a theme and variations on “La Monica” (the nun), & popular song of the time in which a girl pleads with her mother not to make her a nun. The theme itself is notated in, the treble clef, while the four variations consist of progres sively florid embellishments of its bass-part. In a note the composer directs that “if desired, this Arla may be played throughout (the piece) by violin”. An earlier edition (by Max Seitfert for Kistner & Siegel in 1984) supplies such a violin part, thus presenting the work as a piece of chamber music. For this edition the part for optional violin is omitted; instead, the theme has been transposed for bassoon and appears in the subsequent variations in the accompaniment. In Boddecker's time the familly of fagott/ comprised up to eight instruments from oktavbass 10 alt. In this instance fagotto refers to the choristfagott, which was the most ‘common size then in use; a twokeyed dulcian with arange of C-g\, it corresponded in size to the modern bassoon. Judging by the high virtuosity of the work, the composer must have been an accomplished player; in the technically brilliant third variation an exhilarating effect is produced by a change of metre from 4+ 4 +444 to 9 +9 and back again. The solo part in the original is devoid of marks save for trills (unfortunately the tril in the penultimate bar Is unplaya- ble on the modern instrument). The editor has added ‘markings relating to tempo, articulation and breathing: the accompaniment is arranged for keyboard and an optional continuo part for ‘cello included. He wishes to thank the Woarttembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart, for having ‘supplied a microfilm ofthe original edition; he hopes to have restored to the repertory a significant though neglected, work which is both brillant and effective.
