Choosing Your Size

The finished tie length and suggested age range are listed in the size chart. For a tall or short child,
you may want to go up or down a size. A standard men’s necktie is 58” long. I recommend using the
XL for men over 6’ tall and/or plus sizes. Keep in mind that if you do not cut the tie on the bias, a bit
more of the tie will be used to tie the knot since it won’t have any stretch.

Printing Your Pattern and Cutting Your Pieces

Print the pattern at 100% scale. Check the 2” box to ensure it printed correctly. Tape the pattern
pieces together along the black lines so the markings form complete circles. Lay out all pieces before
you begin cutting to ensure the most efficient use of your fabric. Press your fabric prior to cutting and
cut carefully.

• Standard Tie: Print pages 9-19

• Skinny Tie: Print pages 15-25

Sewing Guidelines

All seam allowances are 1/4" and are included in the pattern pieces. Use a straight stitch for
assembly. Make sure you use an appropriate needle and iron temperature for your choice of
fabric.

Assembly

Need help? A video tutorial is available at: http://bit.ly/classicnecktie

1. Prepare your front and back pieces by

pressing along the marked lines, towards the
wrong side of the fabric.

*Tip: Make sure the press lines are marked

precisely and you do a good job pressing. The
final assembly will be much easier if this step is
done well.
2. With right sides together (RST) align one
angled edge of the front lining piece with the
angled edge and side of the front piece. The
lining will not reach all the way to the tip of the
tie. Sew together along the angled edge,
stopping 1/4” before the tip of the lining.

3. Pull the front lining piece over so it’s aligned with the other side of the front piece. Move the
excess front fabric out of the way and sew together along the angled edge. Stop sewing when you
reach the stitching from step 2.

4. Fold the tip of the tie in half so the long edges
are aligned and right sides are together. Sew
across the tip of the tie so the seam intersects
with the seam from step 3 (shown here in red).

Your seam allowance will be larger than 1/4” for

this step; make sure the stitching line intersects
with the seam from steps 2 and 3.

5. Turn the tie right side out and press flat.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 with the back tie piece and

back lining.

7. With RST, line up the notches and sew the

front and back of the tie together. Press the
seam allowance open.

8. Press one long edge of the tie over 1/2”
towards the wrong side of the fabric.

9. Slide the front and back interlining pieces

inside the tie. Make sure the tip of the
interlining meets up with the tip of the tie and
the interlining is centered on the tie between
your pressed lines from step 1.

10. The interlining pieces will overlap. If you’d

like, you can sew them together with a few hand
stitches.

*Tip: The interlining pieces are cut slightly long

to ensure you have enough overlap. If your
pieces overlap more than 1/2”, trim the excess.

11. Press one long edge of the tie over the

interlining. Remember you already pressed this
edge in step 1. Pressing a second time, gives you
crisp edges and presses the front and back
lining.

12. Re-press the other edge of the tie. All raw

edges of the tie should now be inside the tie.

13. Fold the twill tape/bias tape in half so the
short edges meet up. Slide the tie keeper inside
the tie using the suggested placement marking
from the pattern piece as a guide. For optimal
placement, try the tie on the recipient and adjust
as needed.

*Tip: If you are using bias tape instead of twill

tape, sew the edges shut.
14. Sew through all but the outermost layer of
the tie several times at both tips of the tie. Sew
the rest of the tie shut using a slip stitch (blind
stitch).

Remember a video tutorial is available at

http://bit.ly/classicnecktie
if you need help.
15. Fold the tie keeper so it’s laying flat on the
wrong side of the tie. Hand sew both ends in
place.

16. Time to tie the tie. If the tie is on the shorter side for the recipient, use a half windsor knot. If
the tie is on the longer side for the recipient, use a full windsor knot.
