The department had a number of discussions at the department meetings on the opportunity and importance of designing a mentoring and support system for FT NTT and tenure track faculty, but also more generally to support research and career progression of post-tenured faculty. It was agreed that already there is a solid informal support system in place. But that it would be appropriate to formalize some of the existing practices and share information on such practices. It was decided that a so called ‘network form’ of support and mentoring is more appropriate in our department and that faculty would involve different colleagues depending on the specific needs and circumstances, given the wealth and spread of expertise in our department and beyond. Some existing best practices have been solidified these amount to a bottom-up, collectively owned mentoring and support system which includes the following: Chair meets with pre-tenured faculty each term to discuss not only processes and deadlines but also any relevant issue to the development and flourishing of the faculty. Faculty members self-selected a number of colleagues as support/critical friends. They will decide the forms and contents of engagement involving the Chair as necessary. Maintain a standing item on support on service/research & teaching at the departmental meeting. On research we continue to develop our seminar series, to share knowledge and information through our collective email list and to engage in meetings designed to develop further our research potential and reach.
