Type of Departmentalization
1. Functional Departmentalization
In functional departmentalization, an organization is organized into departments
based upon the respective functions each performs for the organization. For example, a
manufacturing company may create a production department, sales and marketing
department, an accounting department, and a human resources department.
2. Geographical Departmentalization
Departmentalization is a method of dividing an organization into different
departments, which performs certain tasks in accordance with the department's
specialization. Organizations can departmentalize along functional, geographic,
product, and customer/market lines.
3. Product Departmentalization
The internal process performed by a corporation of dividing its business
activities up according to the type of goods or services produced. Product
departmentalization typically groups tasks related to a particular product or
product line under one senior manager who specializes in that aspect of the
company's business.

4. Process Departmentalization
Grouping activities on the basis of product, services or customers. Process
departmentalization allows homogenous activities to be categorize in which each
process requires different skills.

5. Customer Departmentalization
Activities are grouped by keeping customer as a key person. Business
owners and managers frequently arrange activities on this basis to cater to the
requirements of clearly defined customers. For example educational institutes
offer regular and extension courses to serve different group of students, financing
institution organize loans at the doorsteps of customers etc.
