Male Reproductive Problems

The most common disorders related to the reproductive

system among older men include
 Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
 Prostate Cancer
 Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Background/Significance
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
 BPH, also known as prostatism, results from noncancerous
enlargement of the prostate gland that is associated with advance
age. This condition affects 50% of men between the ages of 51-60
and up to 90% of men older than 80.

Risk Factors/Warning Signs

 Risk factors for BPH include family history and advanced age that
nearly all men would have some prostate enlargement if they lived
long enough.
Assessment and Diagnosis
 Combination of tests and studies including digital rectal exam (DRE),
urinalysis, postvoiding residual, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) ,
urodynamic studies, ultrasound, and cystoscopy.

Intervention
 Medical treatment generally includes medications and surgery. The
two most frequently used types of medications are alpha-blockers
and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.

Alpha-blockers 5-alpha-reductase
● Alfuzosin ● Finasteride (Proscar)
● Doxazosin (Cardura)
● Terazosin (Hytrin BPH)
● Tamsulosin (Flomax MR)

 And one of the most common surgical interventions for BPH is a

transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or often called the
“Roto-Rooter” surgery.
