Tt provides the user with the capability of visually monitoring a selocted portion of the radio frequency speetrum for the purpose of determining spurious emissions, intermodulation interference, unwanted oselllater radiation, and harmonic levels, This instrument can monitor ‘and audibly identify AM and FM carriers, which is particularly usafal in tho case of interforence. IL ‘may be used to check intermodulation distortion between RF signals, do IP and RF signal bracing and may be used as’a field strength receiver when using « calibrated antonna. DESCRIPTION 4,02 ‘The Spectrum Monttor Is essentially a triple conversion superheteredyne re- coivor with a video display as well as ap audio out- put demodulated from ether AM or FM signals, ‘The frequency range 1s from 1 to 1000 MEz._ IU has four scan widths, 10 kHz, 100 kHz, 1 Mz and 10 Milz per division, IL also bass a selectable 2 ‘kiiz bandwidth ftiter on the 10 Kitz sean width range to reduce notse when viewing low leval signals: 1.03 An LED frequency display with Coarse and Fine tuning controls provides for acotracy in sotting the contor Froquoney of tho display and a graticule calibrated in 10 dB per step divisions makes it possible to view a 70 dB ampli~ tude signal, Its high sensitivity, ~115 dim (0.4j¥), permits viewing extremely low level signsls. 1.0 Front panol acooas to an intoral Lovel and frequency reference makes It passtble to maintain a level aceuracy of measurement of better than + 3dB. Tes passible to introduce an external calibrated signal from au accurate source such as a CE-GA Communications Monitor for use as a frequency calibrating marker simaltanecusly ‘with the aignal being monitored, 1.05 Sweep rate and IF filter controls have been eliminated. These aze sot to thelr optimum value for each range selected, A tisst LF of 2100 Milz eliminates problems from image frequencies, since they will be 4.2 GHz avay from the frequency of interest. 1.06 ‘The input etreuits are protected by a fuse ‘mounizl in the RF input connector to guard the circuits from accidental overloads. This method of mounting makes it possible to change the (use without getting into the instrument 1,07 A high impedance probe may be directly ‘connected to the input connector. A probe powor supply jack is located adjacort to the RE in put to provide for the use of aclive probes. 4.08 A12V DC Inverter is available as a factory ‘modification, M1, to permit operation of the CE-15 from a 12¥ DC supply, ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS 1.09 The following accessorias are furnished with each Spectrum Monitor: Whip Antenna with holder One spare RF input fas; Bm/Volts conversion scale ‘Operating and Maintenance Manual Other accessories available: c/e P/N Description Option M-1_—— 12 Volt Inverter 2180-0163 CRT Viewing Hood ‘To21-v002 Probe. 990 ohm in parallel with 1 PF, to1GRx. 20 dB insertion loos (Toktronix 010-6056-03). Comect a BNC connector cable from CAL, OUT to BF INPUT, 04 ‘Tum the INTENSITY control CW for a traee of euitable briltianes. Prolonged display of a stationary signal or traco of high intonsity may damage the phosphor of the CRT screen. Therefore the trace brilitance should not be set hhighor than is nacessayy for corafortable viewing. 2.05 Center the CAL signal on the F line with tho COARSE and FINE TUNING controls. Use the REFERENCE LEYEL control to aticauate high levels or to bring up low level signals, ‘The absolute level is the al gebraie sum of the dial and the gratteule readings, The frequencies of the various signals seen, celative to the Fo frequency can he determinod by applying the He Diy setting of the SCAN WIDTH switch. OPERATION NOTES, 4. For Improved accuracy tn setiing tae CAL FREQUENCY to the Fy line, rotate the COARSE control fully CCW, then fully CW, thon fully CCW, theu to the CAL slgual display, This remores siight hysteresis from the YIG oscillator. 2. I there 1s any doubt as to the location of the 189 Miz signal on the display, discon- nect the CAL signal from the RF input. Rotate the CANTER FREQUENCY Fy control toward nero fre~ quency, until the L. 0. sigiatl appears. Set the SCAN WIDTH to 10 Mitz and then set the L,0, stz~ nal oxactly one division (10 Milz) io the left of the Fp line on the graticule. Adjust the CAL, FREQ con fol until the CENTER FREQUENCY Fp display reads (1) MHz. Reconnect the CAL signal ta the RF INPUT and rotate CENTER FREQUENCY Fo con- trol tovard Le3 Milz, “Tho first signal that appears will be the 189 Miz CAL signal, 3. ‘The red dot on the dial, with the ced marked RF ATTENUATION dB ranges, indicates the amount of input RF Attenuation switched ia. The 80 and -20 dn REFERENCE LEVEL positione may be set for either 0 or 20 di uF Attenuation and the -10 and 0 dBm positions for either 20 or 40 dR. I apurioas signals duo to bigh level overload are seen, they may be reduced or eliminated by switeh~ ing to the same level with the increased RF Atten— uation, To verify that spurious aignale are ganar aod externally, note that they romain at the samme relative level when switching between two RF Atten= ‘stor positions, mast desirably between —20, ~0; “20, 20; oto. ‘If there is a marked change, they are being generated In the Mixer due to ntertering signal overload.
