Title: Nailing Order of Operations in expressions with Practice

Relevant SC Standards: …

5.ATO.1 Evaluate numerical expressions involving grouping symbols (i.e., parentheses,

brackets, braces).

• 5.ATO.2 Translate verbal phrases into numerical expressions and interpret numerical
expressions as verbal phrases.

• 5.ATO.3 Investigate the relationship between two numerical patterns.

Description: This app lesson will develop 5th grade students’ numerical expressions
and help to interpreting them as verbal phrases with the use of PEMDAS

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to review how to use order of

operations on an expression with the use of grouping symbols. They then will be able to
play the mathematical expressions game giving them practice in solving with PEMDAS.
They then will be able to go to Khan Academy to do more practice. They then will
screenshot their practice on both the Mathematical expressions game and Khan
academy and submit it to canvas by 11:59 on Tuesday.

Step 1 Students would watch the video on lesson 1.12 to give them a better
understanding on how to use the PEMDAS method if they forgot how to later.

Step 2 Students will then practice what they’ve learned on the mathematical
expressions game.

Step 3 Students then will practice more on Khan academy giving them a chance to
show what they have learned.
