T Special Emergency Response Team
The Special Emergency Response Team
(SERT) was formed and became a full-time
unit in 1992. Prior to being named SERT the
unit was called the Special Weapons and
Operations Squad (SWOS). The unit was
initially formed in 1975 as the Emergency
Squad and has had a number of name changes
since that date. Prior to 1992 the unit was
part-time, with officers performing normal

policing duties with tactical training in this
specialist police role conducted on one day
per fortnight.
Today the unit is full-time with staff dedicated
principally to the special police operations
role. The unit can be tasked with a myriad
of duties ranging from surveillance tasks
to counter-terrorist operations. This is
specifically highlighted by our mission.
MISSION
To provide a specialist service to the
community and support police operations
by the attainment of a high level of expertise
and professionalism in resolving incidents
which exceed normal police capabilities.
CHARTER
• To respond to a terrorist incident within
the arrangements agreed to under the
National Anti-Terrorist Plan.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Consideration for appointment to SERT will
include the following criteria:
• Having completed all phases of the Field
Training component, Queensland Police,
prior to application;
• Have two years service in the QPS or
equivalent experience or skills;
• Assessed as a suitable level of
physical fitness to perform SERT
duties;
• Assessed as psychologically suitable
to perform SERT duties;
• High standard of dedication and
motivation
• Willing to undertake an intensive

assessment and selection process;
• High level of self-discipline;
• An undertaking to transfer to SERT upon
successful completion of the Selection
Course and be transferred to Cairns
SERT or Brisbane SERT as required.
 OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES
High Risk Warrant Execution
SERT can perform entry to premises in high
risk situations for the purpose of detaining
persons located within and ensuring the
premises is safe for investigating police.

SERT have specialist tactics and equipment
to deal with specific situations which may
not require the use of lethal force.

Waterborne Tactical Operations
