2. An ideal gas is heated from 50°C to 80°C (a) at constant volume and (b) at constant pressure.

For
whichcase do you think the energy required will be greater? Why?

The energy required at Constant pressure is greater than Constant because at constant pressure the
system is allowed to expand and the energy for this expansion work must also be supplied to the
system.

3. When modeling an engineering process, how is the right choice made between a simple but crude
and acomplex but accurate model? Is the complex model necessarily a better choice since it is more
accurate?

The right choice depends on the situation at hand. The right choice is usually the simplest model that
yields adequate results and contain or reflect the essential features for the physical process that the
model represents. When modeling an engineering process, creating a complex but accurate model is not
neccesarily a better choice as stated in the previous statements.

4. The inner and outer surfaces of a 0.5-cm-thick 2-m x 2-m window glass in winter are 10°C and
3°C,respectively. If the thermal conductivity of the glass is 0.78 W/m · °C, determine the amount of
heatloss, in kJ, through the glass over a period of 5 hours. What would your answer be if the glass were
1 cmthick?

5. Why is it necessary to ventilate buildings? What is the effect of ventilation on energy consumption for
heating in winter and for cooling in summer? Is it a good idea to keep the bathroom fans on all the time?
Explain.

It is necessary to ventilate buildings because ventilation to let fresh air enter and to remove
contaminants in the air such as odors, dust, gases and other types of air pollutants as well as excess
moisture/humidity inside the building. During winter, ventilation allow cold air outside to replace the
warm air inside leading to higher energy consumption for heating while in summer, ventilation allow the
warm air outside replace the cold air inside also causing higher energy consumption. Bathroom fans are
recommended to be on for 20mins or more depending on room’s size after it is used, it is also wasteful
in energy when their air conditioner because they expel either the cooled air or heated air depending on
the season/temperature. In summary it is not recommended to keep the bathroom fans on all time.
