The document is a motivation letter from Novia Antika Anggraeni to join a course on using recent technology for volcano monitoring. As a geophysicist responsible for monitoring 69 volcanoes in Indonesia, she recognizes the growing data requires machine learning and big data analysis. While current monitoring uses mobile apps and digital transmission, no prior training has focused on applying machine learning to seismic data. She hopes the course will deepen her understanding of integrating seismic methods with machine learning to contribute new monitoring methods.

As a staff/scientist in CVGHM (Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard
Mitigation) with background study as geophysicist, my responsibility is to monitor, evaluate, and conduct research related to volcanic activity in Indonesia through seismic data, especially for eastern region. Nowadays, we are monitoring 69 volcanoes. With multiple methods and instruments installed on those volcanoes, the data are keep growing. It is undeniable that data archive and big data analysis through machine learning will be used soon in analysing data and monitoring volcanic activity. Today, we monitor the data both by observer’s report through MAGMA Indonesia application and digital data transmitted to Main Office at Bandung. Besides, some collaborative action with third party (institutions, universities) had been conducted to keep CVGHM updated in recent methods and technology, e.g.: training, short course, field excursion, etc. Nevertheless, none of the courses had been deeply talked about machine learning and big data analysis for volcano monitoring in Indonesia. By joining this course, I want to deepen my understanding and explore more about seismic method analysis combined with recent technology (machine learning) that is beneficial in volcano monitoring activity. In addition, Hopefully, through this course, we can get new knowledge and insight that finally can contribute to create new method/product that will be applicable and beneficial in volcano monitoring.
