EVENT OVERVIEW
What is 3MT?
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University
of Queensland (UQ). Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students have three minutes to present a
compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or
‘dumbing-down’ research, but challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research
discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.
History
The first 3MT was held at The University of Queensland in 2008 with 160 RHD students competing.
Enthusiasm for the 3MT concept grew and its widespread implementation by universities has led to
the development of an international competition.
Strong support for 3MT exists in Australia and New Zealand with 44 institutions coming together to
participate in the 2013 Trans-Tasman 3MT Competition. The event also hosted special guests from
Fiji and Hong Kong. The inaugural International U21 competition was also launched in 2013. The
global reach of the competition can be seen by the extent of participation with almost 200
universities in more than 18 countries also hosting local 3MT events.

Prizes
Prizes are an important incentive for students entering the competition.
The Trans-Tasman competition for 2014 will be hosted by the University of Western Australia. The
competition will be held in early November 2014. For further information regarding the Trans-
Tasman competition please contact Krystyna Haq at: krys.haq@uwa.edu.au

those instances the closest equivalent should be used.
Please Note: The winner of each heat or final is expected to represent their School / Faculty /
University at the next stage of the competition. If the winner is unable to attend the final, the
runner-up will proceed to the next round of the competition in their place.

COMPETITION RULES AND GUIDELINES
Eligibility
Active PhD candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including
candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to
participate in 3MT competitions at all levels, including the Trans-Tasman 3MT competition.
Graduates are not eligible.
Judging Criteria
At every level of the competition each competitor will be assessed on the two judging criteria listed
below. Please note that each criterion is equally weighted and has an emphasis on audience.
Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background to the research question
being addressed and its significance?
Did the presentation clearly describe the key results of the research including conclusions
and outcomes?
Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
Was the thesis topic, key results and research significance and outcomes communicated in
language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
Did the speaker avoid scientific jargon, explain terminology and provide adequate
background information to illustrate points?
Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation - or did they
elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

Rules
A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement'
of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration).
No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are
permitted.
Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are
disqualified.
Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
Presentations are to commence from the stage.
Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their
presentation through movement or speech.
The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
Please note that this countdown timer is not compulsory and we recommend asking each student if
they would like to use it or not.
If a student does not want to see a countdown, the laptop can face the time keeper.
If a student does want to see the countdown timer, simply angle the laptop slightly on the
front row so both the student and the timekeeper are using the same clock.
We recommend adopting the countdown timer due to its effectiveness in previous years. It will also
assist in familiarising students with the format should they go on to compete in the Trans-Tasman
3MT Competition. Students may also like a visual cue (such as raising a visible yellow card in the air)
to illustrate a 30 second warning, and ringing a bell at the final three minute mark.
