1. Poverty is the state of being poor.

28 percent of the total


population of India live below the poverty line. According to the
United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP), Human
Development Report, 2019.
2. The main cause of poverty is over-population. The national income
has failed to keep pace with the growing population. In rural areas,
poverty is due to low land base. There is low level of productivity in
rural areas. The urban poor are largely due to the overflow of rural
poor into the urban areas. The unemployment problem is another
cause of poverty. The uneven distribution of I resources are other
reasons of poverty. Moreover, the industrial growth in India is slow.
There is a slow increase in the demand for labor. There is a rise in
the cost of living also.
3. Poverty gives rise to child labour. According to ILO there are
around 12.9 million Indian children engaged in child labour
between the ages of 7 to 17.
