The content of this course is directly adapted from “33: The Series” and the original “Authentic
Manhood” men’s ministry teaching from Robert Lewis.
We’re going to go back to look at the Bible for how God has created us as men. We’re going to
go forward to give us a vision of biblical manhood. This is teaching and training. Recruit a team
(e.g. your LG) to process this and to do it together. Our world desperately needs better men: our
families, churches, and society need better men! Here are eight current manhood realities…
• Recent statistics reveal that 90% of murders are committed by men. 88% of robberies
are committed by men, and 75% of all people arrested are men (source: the U.S.
Department of Justice).
• “Gender is the single best predictor of criminal behavior: men commit more crime,
and women commit less. This distinction holds throughout history, for all societies,
for all groups, and for nearly every crime category” (source: Darrell Steffensmeier
and Emilie Allan, “Gender and Crime,” in Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice).
8. Without a compelling vision for manhood, men will settle for less in life.
CHALLENGE
Why did you join this manhood journey? What expectations do you have personally?
• God CREATES.
• God CULTIVATES.
Genesis 1:26-28 (ESV): “26 Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the
heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that
creeps on the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he
created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said
to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion
over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that
moves on the earth.’”
4. Masculinity is about having the courage to move towards the way God created us.
1. Adam failed in these areas. He did not show the courage to lead.
Genesis 3:6 (ESV): “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it
was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took
of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he
ate.”
2. There are two typical “misses” when it comes to experiencing God’s best for our life.
• The way of the fruit (Gen 3:6): Adam and Eve chose their own way over God’s will.
• The way of the fig leaves (Gen 3:7): Those who try to cover themselves with good
behavior and try to perform their way into God’s favor.
GOD’S SOLUTION
Genesis 3:21 (ESV): “And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of
skins and clothed them.”
Romans 5:8 (ESV): “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ
died for us.”
Romans 3:22 (ESV): “Righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe.”
1 Timothy 2:5 (ESV): “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus.”
5. Only by placing our trust in Jesus can we have salvation as well as the power that
fuels the REAL Manhood we are talking about.
MISUNDERSTANDING MANHOOD
1. Men who choose the way of the fruit become childish consumers.
1 Corinthians 15:45 (ESV): "Thus it is written, 'The first man Adam became a living
being'; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit."
1 Corinthians 15:45 tells us that our model, Jesus, is a life-giving spirit. He blessed
others, gave to others, and encouraged others.
2. Men who choose the way of the fig leaves become cowards and critics.
CHALLENGE
® Trust Jesus for our salvation and look at him as our model for REAL Manhood.
® Embrace the mandate to “create” and “cultivate” in the five areas of life: personhood,
family, work/career, neighborhood.
Personhood:
Family:
Work/Career:
Church:
Neighborhood:
How are you creating and cultivating in the different roles in your life? As a husband? As a
father? At work? As a friend? Are you being a “life-giving spirit” (1 Corinthians 15:45)?
Are you more inclined to go towards the “way of the fruit” or the “way of the fig leaf”? In
what specific ways do you see this in your own life?
1. God gave man a will to obey: It is a will that is greater than our own.
2. God gave man a work to do: Follow God’s example to create and cultivate.
3. God gave man a woman to love: A companion for intimacy and fellowship.
Romans 5:17, 19 (ESV): “For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through
that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free
gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. ...For as by the one
man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the
many will be made righteous.”
2. Every man will walk in the shadow of one of these two men.
1. Reject passivity.
Genesis 3:6 (ESV): “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it
was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took
of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he
ate.”
Philippians 2:5-9 (ESV): “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ
Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to
be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the
likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming
obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
Adam invested in the temporary, choosing what would satisfy him in the moment.
Matthew 6:19-20 (ESV): “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth
and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not
break in and steal.”
3. Accept responsibility.
Adam failed in the three specific responsibilities that were given to him by God.
John 4:34 (ESV): “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his
work.”
John 17:4 (ESV): “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave
me to do.”
Ephesians 5:25 (ESV): “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave
himself up for her...”
4. Lead Courageously.
Matthew 4:19 (ESV): “He said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'”
John 10:11 (ESV): “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for
the sheep.'”
1 Corinthians 15:45, 47 (ESV): “Thus it is written, ‘The first man Adam became a living
being’; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. …The first man was from the earth, a
man of dust; the second man is from heaven.”
CHALLENGE
It is hopeless to live this out without the life-giving spirit of Jesus fueling your journey. But
with Jesus, we can also become REAL men who reject passivity, expect an eternal reward,
accept responsibility, and lead courageously.
As you think about the areas of your life in which Jesus calls us to follow him (personhood,
family, work/career, church, neighborhood), what specific ways can you exercise being a
REAL man?
Personhood:
Family:
Work/Career:

What do you think or feel about this compelling, biblical definition of authentic manhood?
What areas of being a “REAL man” are you struggling with in your life (rejecting passivity,
expecting an eternal reward, accepting responsibility, and leading courageously)?
Think about your “strategic moves” to make in light of this definition of manhood.
1. The essence of the King Face is providing for others and loving what is right. The
King Face reflects righteous energy, characterized by:
Strong conviction
Servant’s spirit
Righteous leadership
3. Biblical example of the King Face can be seen in the apostles (Acts 6:1-7).
Acts 6:2-4 (ESV): "And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,
'It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit
and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word.'"
1. The essence of the Warrior Face is fighting for all that matters. The Warrior Face
reflects courageous energy, characterized by:
Initiative
Protection
Provision
Perseverance
Run the race to win. Fight for the noble things and eternal things.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (ESV): “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but
only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-
control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body
and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
1 Timothy 6:11-12 (ESV): “But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the
faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made
the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
3. Biblical example of the Warrior Face can be seen in Joshua (Joshua 1:4-5).
Joshua 1:6-7 (ESV): “Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit
the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous,
being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do
not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success
wherever you go.”
If a man’s Warrior Face is pushed too far, he can become abusive and harsh to those
around him- the destroyer. If a man does not have enough of the Warrior Face, he can
struggle with passivity. He easily gives up and is quick to tap out or surrender- the wimp.
There are a sea of men who are soft and lack in leadership, following through, and
finishing what they start.
CHALLENGE
The King Face creates order and provision. It provides direction. It leads with integrity. It
allows us to be a blessing to those entrusted to our care. The Warrior Face shows our
courageous energy and demands from us purposeful initiative. A man who wears the Warrior
Face is a man of action.

Do you identify more with the King Face or the Warrior Face? Why? In what ways do you
need to grow as a King or a Warrior?
1. The Lover Face is primarily associated with tender care for others and a willingness
to be emotionally vulnerable.
1 Thessalonians 2:7-9 (ESV): 7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother
taking care of her own children. 8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready
to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had
become very dear to us. 9 For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked
night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you
the gospel of God.
2. The essence of the Lover Face is tenderness, sensitivity, beneficial care, emotional
openness, physical affection, and verbal communication. The Lover Face reflects
relational energy, characterized by:
Being there for his family and a student of his wife and children
3. Biblical example of the Lover Face can be seen in Boaz (Ruth 2-4).
Ruth 2:19-21 (ESV): And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you glean today? And
where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you.” So she told her
mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, “The man's name with whom I
worked today is Boaz.” And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by
the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to
her, “The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.” And Ruth the Moabite
said, “Besides, he said to me, ‘You shall keep close by my young men until they have
finished all my harvest.’”
4. Caricatures of the Lover Face: the micro-manager, the detached, and the over-
sensitive man.
1. The Friend Face is primarily associated with a man’s relational capacity to connect
with other men.
Proverbs 17:17 (ESV): “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Proverbs 27:17 (ESV): “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
Loyalty
Accountability
Encouragement
Challenge
Fun
3. Biblical example of the Friend Face can be seen in Barnabas (Acts 4:36, 9:26-27,
11:22-26).
Acts 9:26-27 (ESV): And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the
disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple.
But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on
the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had
preached boldly in the name of Jesus.
CHALLENGE
The Lover Face and the Friend Face stretch our relational capacity and can be unnatural for
many men. Many men suffer from a stunted and reduced masculinity because they have
never valued or learned to navigate their own heart, their own feelings, and their own
emotions. Relational capacity requires men to engage emotionally.

PART 6: SEASONS
Those on the path of REAL Manhood are not only aware of different situations in their life,
but they are also aware of the different seasons of life.
KEY IDEAS
1. Begin with the end in mind. Be a learner throughout the seasons of your life by
examining the lives of godly men before you.
2. The power of mentorship: Men who have already experienced the season you are in
right now.
3. Anticipate transition: It is wise to plan for major transitions. The law of the harvest.
4. We reap what we sow: We reap more than we sow and we reap in different seasons
than we sow.
Galatians 6:7-8 (ESV): “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows,
that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap
corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (ESV): “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you
abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body
in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God.”
• Have I allowed enough time for a spiritual life and authentic relationships?
David Levinson calls men between the ages of 45 to 60 the “dominant generation,” the
season of creating and implementing the governing ideas in every sector of society- whether
it’s politics, business, religion, art, or science.
Proverbs 20:29 (ESV): “The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old
men is their gray hair.”
2. The greatest danger of this season is for a man believe the lie that he can no longer
contribute.
CHALLENGE
Your strategic move here should be two-sided: Find an older man (same season or the one
ahead of you) to learn from. Find a younger man (the one season behind you or same
season) to invest into.
