Why should parents monitor their children’s use of the Internet?

In what way do parents break their children’s trust in them if they spy
on them online?
That kind of attitude can lead to mutual distrust between parents and
children. It can encourage them to try even harder to hide risky behavior
because they know that their parents are looking for it. Parents should
build an open, honest, and trusting relationship with their children,
which will allow them to ask for help when they experience something
inappropriate online.
Why would parents monitoring their children’s online activities cause
conflicts?
Monitoring every movement children make may give them the message
that parents don’t trust them and can lead to real problems in their
relationship. Every child has a right to privacy and if they feel that it is
invaded, that can cause rebellion and alienate the child from the parent.
How would parents affect their children’s friendships if they monitored
their online activities?
Parents should talk about the difference between online friendships and
offline ones especially with younger children. They should encourage
them to speak if anything happens online that makes them feel worried,
scared or uncomfortable. They must also help them to recognise when
other people may be bullying them online. Finally, they should talk to
their children regularly about their views and values on friendships and
relationships.
