The Martin Mars was originally used as a bomber for long range missions
and patrols. The production aircraft were redesigned and dassifiad for long-
range general transport because of the demonstrated heavy-lft capability
of the prototype. The Martin Mars established ait and endurance records
‘which remain valid today and logged some 87,000 accident-free hours
before being retired by the US. Navy and sold to Fying Tankers.
After the aircraft were retired from the Navy, they were transformed into
‘refighting aerial tankers. The aicraft can cary 7,200 gallans of water or
