The Present simple

Uses of the present simple


 Routines /Habits (things we do regularly): I wake up early every day.
 Timetable (schedule): The plane leaves at 7 a.m.
 Facts ( general truth): Beirut is the capital of Lebanon

I. Affirmative form:

To form the present simple tense we use the base form of the verb (go, work, speak, study)

In 3rd person singular (he, she, it), the base form of the verb takes -s/es:

1- Verbs that end in ch, x, s require an -es:

watch  watches fix  fixes pass  passes

2- a) Verbs ending in y preceded by a consonant are formed by changing the y to i and adding es:

fly flies study studies

b) Verbs ending in y preceded by a vowel are formed by adding -s only:

play plays stay stays

3- Verbs ending in o preceded by a consonant require an -es:

go goes dodoes

II. Negative form of the present simple

Ex: Affirmative: I study English on Mondays.

Negative: I don’t study English on Mondays.

He/She/It    does not/doesn't + base form of the verb

Ex: Affirmative: She sleeps early.

Negative: She doesn’t sleep early.


III. Interrogative form of the present simple
 Does+ he/ she/ it + base form of the verb+ question mark (?)
Answer: yes, he/she/it does or No, he/she/it/ doesn’t

Example: Affirmative: He studies every day after school


Interrogative: Does he study every day after school?
Answer: yes, he does or No, he doesn’t

Do + we/you/ they/I + base form of the verb + question mark(?)


Answer: yes, we/ you/ they/ do. or No, we/you/they/I don’t.

For example: Affirmative: They play football at the weekend.


Interrogative: Do they play football at the weekend?
Answer: Yes, they do. or No, they don’t.
