Let's Apply
Various Ways the Spaniards Influenced Philippine Literature
The Philippines is a country rich in diversity and language heritage. From the
precolonial period to the Spanish colonization, our literature has evolved tremendously.
Spanish colonization breathed a different kind of life in the richness of our literature. The
Spanish colonial period of the Philippines began when explorer Ferdinand Magellan
came to the islands in 1521 and claimed it as a colony for the Spanish Empire. The
period lasted until the Philippine Revolution in 1898. In the 333 years of being colonized
by the Spaniards, our literature was affected.
Spaniards inspired our literature in a various ways. The Spaniards have
continued to promote their own culture and customs in the Philippines for the next 333
years since Ferdinand Magellan's arrival. Among their influences are the first Filipino
alphabet called Alibata was replaced by the roman alphabet but before the Spanish
seize our country, we have old language that our ancestors use and alibata composed
of seventeen letters, the fourteen letter is consonant and the three letter is vowel but
now we have 28 letters. And also the Spanish language, which became the literary
language during this time, lent many of its words to our language and ancient literature
was collected and translated to Tagalog and other dialects. The Spaniards also
influence us about our religion, indigenous Philippine folk religions collectively referred
to as Anitism or Bathalism, the traditional religion of Filipinos which predates Philippine
Christianity. Furthermore, religious practices became based on the teachings of
Christian doctrine and our periodicals during the Spanish colonization gained a religious
tone. Lastly, European legends and traditions brought here became assimilated in our
songs, corridos, and moro-moros.
The Spanish have had a significant impact on Philippine Literature and as of
now we use it in our everyday life. The influences of Spaniards colonization has a lot
advantages in the Philippines like we became more religious and our writing is not that
complicated because we have alibata before but now we are using a basic letters and
many more. And we can say that Spaniards colonization has a great impact to our
Philippines literature.

Let's Evaluate
The Spaniards have continued to promote their own culture and customs in
the Philippines for the next 333 years since Ferdinand Magellan's arrival. There's a lot
of changes in our literature as explained it on the let's apply part in our activity. As a
student, I look at the positive effects of those influences because when you analyze
those influences, you can know that it can really help us to be more good and have a
easy life. The positive effects of being colonized by the Spaniards are having a roman
alphabet because if we look at the first language that we used to write is called alibata
and it looks like complicated because of the stroke of every letters but when the spanish
influence us about their writings, we are now using it and it was easiest to write. And
also our religion, before we have a bathalism but now the influence of spanish which is
Christianity has become our most religion in our country. As a student, I know that the
333 years of being colonized or controlled by Spaniards is not easy but we can see that
those sacrifices of the Filipinos are worth it because it has a positive effects in our
country even as of today.
