CONCONE STUDIES
FOR HORN
arranged by
Robert Ashworth
Horn in F
(piano accompaniment available separately)
Emerson Edition
299a
GIUSEPPE CONCONE (1801-1861) was an Italian singing master, pianist and composer. He
wrote several volumes of vocal exercises which won world-wide recognition for their
usefulness. A selection from Opus 9 and Opus 17 have been adapted here for the specific use
of hom players.
The purpose of these studies is to help develop a beautifully centred sound while at the same
time attending to musical expression and taste in the performance of a long melodic phrase.
The studies do not go too high in range, so the player can aim to play easily, without strain,
and maintain a beautifully centred sound at all times.
The studies should also be transposed into different keys to help attain facility of reading in all
the necessary transpositions. Some suggestions are provided. The studies written in bass clef
may be played in new or old notation, depending on the needs or ability of the player.
General technique and flexibility in the low register will be enhanced by also transposing any
of the treble clef studies down one octave.
Finally I cannot stress enough that the need to achieve and maintain a cantabile (singing)
line, with a beautiful sound at all times, is of paramount importance.
A piano accompaniment is available separately. Playing the studies with the piano heightens
awareness of ensemble, musicality and, in particular, intonation - an area often-neglected.
The accompaniments are fairly easy, and can create an interesting and stimulating interaction
between pupil and teacher.
