LETTER OF INTENT
In this section, it is expected to explain following details: your academic and social experiences
relating the field you want to take an education, your reasons for choosing Turkey for study and
the importance of your future plans for your education and scholarship in Turkey. You can write
the letter of intent in the language you can express yourself.
I was graduated from religion department of Islamic Senior High School in West Sumatra. And I
always interested in Hadith study, it’s because my teacher that graduated from Cairo University of
Egypt always support me for learning hadis.
He was my high school chief, he said that I got big potential in hadith study and I should develop
the potential. After the graduation in 2015, I was applying to Cairo University and Morocco in
syari’ah, history department, and hadith department in Sunan Kalijaga University by scholarship
program. But, I got accepted in State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga in Hadith department
with Scholarship program.
The scholarship sponsored by Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. I was one of 40
Awardees that passed the selection from 6000 applicants from all regions of Indonesia. I think,
this is my biggest success that I have experienced that time. Now, I am waiting for my bachelor's
graduation in early august 2019. And to fill my waiting time until august, I teach student in schools,
doing social movement and lead my organization.
Indonesia is the largest muslim country in the world, and there is a lot of scholars that expert on
quranic study. And unfortunately there is only few scholars that expert on hadith study in
Indonesia. Turkey as a part of Islamic history and science was so convincing and beneficial
to study there, especially in hadith study. For example there is Professor Zakaria Guler, an expert
on hadith study in Istanbul University and Professor Ismail Hakki in Ankara University.
Furthermore, universities in Turkey is one of the best education system in the world, I believe
Turkey is the best place for me to obtain knowledge and experiences. And for my future plans, I
am planning to continue my postgraduate program in hadith study to be an expert as professor on
hadith Study, and become one of Indonesia’s hadith expert.
Nowadays, students and scholars interest on hadith studies very low in Indonesia, and there is only
a few institutions that focus on hadith studies, I am planning to create an institution center for
hadith study collaborating with Turkish Government in Indonesia in order to improve student and
scholars interest on hadith studies, I will name it “Pesantren Hadis Al-Fatih”.

1- Subject of study
Turkey had a lot of hadith experts, for example Professor Ismail Hakki that expert on hadith studies
and a respected lecturer at Ankara University. I will obtain more knowledge and experiences of
hadith sciences from the hadith expert in Turkey just like Professor Ismail Hakki, especially in
Living Hadith Study, a new way to integrating and interconnecting Hadith Study with culture and
tradition in now era. I am planning to implementing my knowledge and experiences globally,
especially in Turkey and Indonesia.
2- Working Title (Up to 15 words)(Please write in short and concise terms the title of your work
as a thesis or an article title.)
Whirling Dervishes Tradition Phenomenon (A Living Hadith Study)
3- Analysis of the Problem (at least 75, maximum 300 words)(In this section, briefly describe the
topic and your theory (concept map) to be used in the study.)
Whirling Dervishes is a dance performance by Sufis, they believe it is a religious dance to express
their emotion, peace, wisdom and love of God. This dancing tradition originally from Konya,
Turkey found in 13th century. This Sufi's dance was founded by Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi. Sufism
in Islam is practice of attempting to achieve divine knowledge and love though a personal
relationship with god, Whirling Dervishes for example.
Written in Al-Fatawy Al-Haditsiyah a book by Ibn Hajar Al-Haitami; in prophet Muhammad
period, a companion called Ja’far ibn Abi Thalib ever doing dance in front of prophet Muhammad.
This happen because the prophet praise him, and told Ja’far that he had appearance and behavior
similar to the prophet Muhammad. After that Ja’far very happy to hear it and doing dance in front
of Muhammad, and Mohammad did not ever forbid the dance that Ja’far done.
According to Pierre Bourdiou (French Sociologist), each tradition must have its origin history
when this tradition was formed. How the tradition is formed and its purpose. Whirling Dervishes
is tradition performed by Sufis because of feeling happy, loved, and wisdom of God. The Sufi’s
dance performed to express their emotion to God. This phenomenon just the same case as when a
soccer player scores goals, they will run around, dance and so on as their expressions of pleasure
and happy.
Whirling Dervishes is a tradition that founded by Jalaluddin Rumi in 13th century, an expert in
Kalam sciences that time, and he were learning about hadith and quranic science. The Question,
is Jalaluddin Rumi motivated by Ja’far Hadith that doing dance in front of the Prophet? If so, is
Whirling Dervishes have a connection with this hadith? Or is it acculturation between hadith and
Tradition in Turkey?
4- Research Method (minimum 50 maximum 300 words)"(Give information about the academic
research methods you intend to use in this study. For example, in-depth interviews, observations,

This research will use “literature research” most of the time. I think this way is effective and
efficient for this topic. Turkey has an extremely large database for scientific research and all
document can be accessed through the internet. I can also do “field research” by visiting Konya
and Jalaluddin Rumi’s historical place. And after I collected all of the data that I need, then I will
analyze the data with Pierre Bourdiu’s theory (Habitus Theory).
5- General Structure of the Study (at least 75, maximum 300 words)Write the main headings of
the study.)
In the first chapter I will discuss the background of the problem, the formulation of the problem,
the theoretical framework and the reference of the book relating to the object of studies. In the
second chapter, I will discuss about biography of Jalaluddin Rumi. In the third chapter, will mainly
discussed about Whirling Dervishes and Pierre Bourdieu theory. In the fourth chapter, I will
analyze the result from literature data and the field observation data with Habitus theory of Pierre
Bourdiou. And in the fifth chapter contains conclusions of the research.
6- Academic Contribution of the Study (minimum 75, maximum 300 words) (Explain how this
study will contribute to your academic field.)
Turkey has a lot of cultures, such as cheek kissing, Whirling Dervishes and others. In this
research’s goal is to contribute to the Living Hadith Study and Turkey Culture science. Whirling
Dervishes is a unique tradition in Turkey that nowadays have spread to all over the world. This
research helps those who want to get deeper and comprehend culture history of Whirling Dervishes
Tradition in Turkey and Jalaluddin Rumi’s thought on Hadith.

think is not clear enough and you want to explain, or if you want to draw the attention of the
evaluation committee, please briefly explain in this section. You can write the description in the
language you can express yourself.
