Lesson 1
Philosophy of Philosophers
Know yourself. It was quite exciting and nervous to start college life with a
subject Understanding the Self, as it let me wonder if I really know myself, do I really
understand myself, or simple question such as what might I learn in this topic that will
help me improve and develop. Everything was blurred, and I couldn’t figure out the right
description or feeling about understanding the self, but then, it was thrilling to explore
and learn new things regarding building up self to its fullest.
Allegory of the cave. This parable of Plato opened my mind and eyes to people
who have a strong belief in something that they will willingly spend the rest of their lives
for it. The allegory talked about a world where people in a cave believe it is the real
world. They live there just watching the people’s shadows passing by the bridge. One
person in the group started to wonder and tried to go out and saw a world where
everything has color, clear and is real. He went back and informed others, but they
won’t believe them and chose to stay in the cave while the man explored the real world.
The real world is not real. This is what the allegory of the cave depicts, and it
made me wonder if the world we are now living in is a real-world or just one of those
worlds. I remembered an argument with my friend. I asked him if he believes in a
parallel universe, and he told me he is. And what we are living in right now may be one
of those worlds. Of course, none of us knows the reality of reality as it will always
remain as a statement where no one can answer except for our creator, who knows
everything.

Lesson 2
What we are and have right now is the product of anthropology as it is the study
of people, past and present. All of us are similar in terms of physical aspect as we have
head, shoulder, knees, toes, etc. however, despite the similarities, there is always an
instant where we differ from one another. Anthropology proves this as it is to understand
how humans evolved and how they differ from one another. I learned that anthropology
involves cultures, which individuals have and these cultures became the practices of
people living in the past that preserved and still practice today. We have different
cultures and traditions that also make us different from others. What we believe in might
not be in other people. What we practice might not be appreciated or given importance
to others. However, even though we have different beliefs, cultures, and traditions, we
should always put respect in everything. We should respect others for us to be
respected as well.
Our environment has a great impact on influencing people. Every one of us has
an interaction with our environment, which in our society and it influence us in many
ways, such as our norms, beliefs, and values. Through interaction with our society, we
are mold and developed individually. We developed our identity, which made us unique
from other people. A real-life scenario of this is I am influenced by my parents to be a
Catholic and pray daily. They taught me to be kind and good to others and always be
responsible with my action. I grew up carrying those influenced and I personally value
those. Another one is participating in a club organization. That organization helped me
build my confidence, and it improved my social skills as I was given an opportunity to be
with people I barely knew or didn’t know. Through that, I gain knowledge and
experiences that I might remember in the future.

Lesson 4
Some people differ in culture, especially when it is from Western and Eastern
countries. In Western culture, there are four categories on how the self is used:
analytical, monotheistic, individualistic, and materialistic. In analytical, the self is an
observer separate and distinct from external objects, which means it is “Me versus
Other.” Monotheism involved the tendency to unitary explanations of phenomena and a
closed system view of the “self.” Individualism is where self-expression and self-
actualization are important ways of establishing who one is and finding satisfaction in
the world. Furthermore, Materialistic that tends to discredit explanations that do not use
analytic-deductive modes of thinking.
