Lesson 1

Philosophy of Philosophers

Know yourself. It was quite exciting and nervous to start college life with a
subject Understanding the Self, as it let me wonder if I really know myself, do I really
understand myself, or simple question such as what might I learn in this topic that will
help me improve and develop. Everything was blurred, and I couldn’t figure out the right
description or feeling about understanding the self, but then, it was thrilling to explore
and learn new things regarding building up self to its fullest.

Wise men, the Philosophers. It amazed me upon knowing different perspectives

of Philosophers about self. The philosophy contradicts one another but still has respect
for one’s belief. If you will ask me what Philosophy captured my interest and heart, it is
from the Ancient Classical Philosophy, Socrates. His famous life, “The unexamined life
not worth living,” is engraved in my system as it is accurate. Believe it or not, life will
always be boring without exploration and new learning. Maybe other people won’t
agree, but if you really think about it, they may not realize that even in their simple
actions such as eating new food or wearing different clothing styles, they were already
trying new.

Allegory of the cave. This parable of Plato opened my mind and eyes to people
who have a strong belief in something that they will willingly spend the rest of their lives
for it. The allegory talked about a world where people in a cave believe it is the real
world. They live there just watching the people’s shadows passing by the bridge. One
person in the group started to wonder and tried to go out and saw a world where
everything has color, clear and is real. He went back and informed others, but they
won’t believe them and chose to stay in the cave while the man explored the real world.

The real world is not real. This is what the allegory of the cave depicts, and it
made me wonder if the world we are now living in is a real-world or just one of those
worlds. I remembered an argument with my friend. I asked him if he believes in a
parallel universe, and he told me he is. And what we are living in right now may be one
of those worlds. Of course, none of us knows the reality of reality as it will always
remain as a statement where no one can answer except for our creator, who knows
everything.

Lesson 2

Anthropology and Sociology

What we are and have right now is the product of anthropology as it is the study
of people, past and present. All of us are similar in terms of physical aspect as we have
head, shoulder, knees, toes, etc. however, despite the similarities, there is always an
instant where we differ from one another. Anthropology proves this as it is to understand
how humans evolved and how they differ from one another. I learned that anthropology
involves cultures, which individuals have and these cultures became the practices of
people living in the past that preserved and still practice today. We have different
cultures and traditions that also make us different from others. What we believe in might
not be in other people. What we practice might not be appreciated or given importance
to others. However, even though we have different beliefs, cultures, and traditions, we
should always put respect in everything. We should respect others for us to be
respected as well.

Our environment has a great impact on influencing people. Every one of us has
an interaction with our environment, which in our society and it influence us in many
ways, such as our norms, beliefs, and values. Through interaction with our society, we
are mold and developed individually. We developed our identity, which made us unique
from other people. A real-life scenario of this is I am influenced by my parents to be a
Catholic and pray daily. They taught me to be kind and good to others and always be
responsible with my action. I grew up carrying those influenced and I personally value
those. Another one is participating in a club organization. That organization helped me
build my confidence, and it improved my social skills as I was given an opportunity to be
with people I barely knew or didn’t know. Through that, I gain knowledge and
experiences that I might remember in the future.

Lesson 3

Psychology

Studying how do human mind works feels amazing. Psychology seeks to

determine the phenomena on what is going on the mind of an individual. It is the
scientific study of how individual behave, think, and feel. It also includes how the brain
works, how our memory is organized, and how people interact with other people and
their environment. I also learned that cognitive psychology is the study of how human
mind think and it deals how an individual’s mind makes a good decision; it is to
determine the right and wrong. I want to know more about how our minds and behavior
work.

I learned the goals of psychology, which are describing human behavior,

explaining why did it occur or happened, predicting the response of a person, and
control such as finding out how to stop or prevent a particular behavior. The most
exciting part of the psychology for me is the different meaning of dreams. I want to
understand people. I want to know how can I help them, cause I am willing to do so. I
also watched psychological movie like Split. It was a fantastic story as there are 23
identities inside a person’s body, and those identities are creating another identity. It
was quite scary but exciting, and you can really know something about what is going on
inside a human’s mind.

Lesson 4

Western and Eastern Culture

Some people differ in culture, especially when it is from Western and Eastern
countries. In Western culture, there are four categories on how the self is used:
analytical, monotheistic, individualistic, and materialistic. In analytical, the self is an
observer separate and distinct from external objects, which means it is “Me versus
Other.” Monotheism involved the tendency to unitary explanations of phenomena and a
closed system view of the “self.” Individualism is where self-expression and self-
actualization are important ways of establishing who one is and finding satisfaction in
the world. Furthermore, Materialistic that tends to discredit explanations that do not use
analytic-deductive modes of thinking.

Eastern Culture believes in Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Islam. In

Confucianism, they believe in the teaching of Confucius as they based their living on his
teaching, which is the Analects. People in Eastern Countries also believe in Taoism,
and my favorite concept in Taoism is their Yingyang symbol which is bad and good.
They believe that bad luck and good luck can’t be separated and there will always be
good in every bad thing and vice versa. Buddhism, which has a concept of Nirvana
which is their final goal after experiencing suffering and karma. And lastly, Islam
believes that the self is something that has to be nurtured and self-regulated so it can
progress into becoming good through its thoughts and actions.
