(3 mins) I. WARM-UP

General Objective: Warming up students to the topic,

generating their interest, and catching their attention.

The aim of the T: Tell the class the name of one of

your favorite musicians and share examples of his or

her work. Talk about what you like about him or her

and how he or she inspired you. Share a few examples

of the things that you've achieved through this

inspiration. Ask a few students about their favorite

musicians.

T: Do you have a favorite musician? What do you like

about him or her? How did he or she inspire you?

Ss: Ss give answers to the warm-up questions one by

one.

II. PRE-READING

AIM 1: Helping students in their reading by giving

them some ideas to what the topic might be about, and

drawing students’ interest to give them the motive to

(5 mins) read to text.

Activity 1: The theme of the reading material will be

introduced to the students in order to activate students’

content schema.
The aim of the T: T puts the students in small groups

and asks a few questions in order to start a short

discussion to get students thinking about the topic and

to activate the students’ schema. After about 5 minutes

stop the discussion

T: Okay, today we are going to read a mini-biography

of John Lennon who is one of the main songwriters of

the Beatles.

The aim of the T: T forms groups of three.

T: Elif, Canan, and Zeynep you work together. Ali,

Ahmet, and Hasan you work together.

T: T opens the slide, and reads the questions out loud.

T: Have you ever thought about being a famous

musician? Would you prefer your chance to become a

famous musician over your school career? How would

it be? You have 5 minutes to discuss.

Ss: Ss discuss about the questions with their group

members.

T: Okay, time is over. What are your opinions?

Ss: In each group, one student gives a brief summary

of what they’ve talked.

The aim of the T: T listens carefully to all groups one

by one.

AIM 2: Setting the context. Giving students a few

prediction questions for the first reading.

(8 mins)

Activity 2: Students will predict the context by

answering the prediction questions. The first reading

will be done. Students’ predictions will be written on

the board, and also will be elicited.

T: Now we are going to watch a short video. What do

you think the text might be about? Take notes. You

have 5 minutes.

Ss: Ss take notes and finish making predictions in the

given time.

The aim of the T: T writes students’ predictions on the

board (e.g. his family, his supporters, his death, his

partnership, etc.) and elicits them.

T: Now read the text about John Lennon and find out if

these are mentioned in the text.

Ss: Ss read the text.

The aim of the T: When students finish the reading, T

goes back and checks what extend their predictions

were mentioned in the reading material and then gives

feedback to the students.

T: Now let’s go through your predictions. Is the writer

talking about John's family?

Ss: Ss say yes.

T: Yes, he is talking about John’s family.

The aim of the T: T says the true predictions one by

one.

General Objective: To check the students’

understanding of the material.

AIM 1: To help students to break down the meaning of

the text and make it easier to understand.

(8 mins)
Activity 1: A series of short simple questions will be
asked to students.

The aim of T: Hand out the Worksheet 1 to the

students.

T: Now, look at Activity 1. There are five questions.

Read the questions first and then the text. Write the

answers. You have 8 minutes.

Ss: Ss read the questions and then the text silently.

T: Okay, time is over. Have you finished?

Ss: Ss say yes.

T: Let’s check your answers then.

The aim of the T: T gives feedback to students by

going through the questions and the answers with the

students.

AIM 2: To help students get an overview of a text and

get main points.

(8 mins)
Activity2: Students will skim the text and understand

the main idea.

T: Now, look at the Activity 2. Read the question first

and then skim the text. Write your answers on the

sheet. You have 8 minutes.

T: Has everybody finished?

Ss: Ss say yes.

T: Who wants to share their answer?

Ss: Ss raises their hands.

The aim of the T: T starts to choose from the

volunteer students.

IV. POST-READING

General objective: To help students personalize the

topic.

(8 mins)
AIM 1: Students will improve their fluency.
Activity 1: Speaking Activity (Pair Work)

The aim of T: Hand out the Worksheet 2 to students.

T: Now, we have a speaking activity. You will work

with a partner. Look at the interview questions on

Worksheet 2. Imagine that your partner is a famous

musician. Ask the questions to your partner and note

your partner’s answers. Be prepared to present a brief

summary about your partner.

The aim of T: T puts students into pairs by pointing

who works with whom.

T: Elif and Ali, you work together. You have 8

minutes.

Ss: Ss work in pairs.

The aim of T: While students work together, monitor

and note any difficulties the students have with the

language.
T: Has everybody finished?

Ss: Ss say yes.

T: Good. Elif, can you present us a brief summary

about your partner?

S: S gives a brief summary about her partner.

T: Thank you. Anybody else?

The aim of T: T receives feedback from each pair.

AIM 2: To develop students’ accuracy.

Activity 2: Writing Activity (Individual Work –

HOMEWORK)

T: As homework, write a letter to your favorite

musician. Bring your letters to class tomorrow.

WORKSHEET 1

Activity 1: Read the text and answer the questions.

JOHN LENNON
John Lennon was born at the beginning of the Second World War in Liverpool, an important port
which was heavily bombed. His father was a sailor and so didn’t see the family very often and,
after the war, he left them.
John’s mother found it difficult to look after John and go out to work so he often stayed with his
mother’s older sister, his Aunt Mimi. Eventually, he moved to his aunt’s permanently and grew
up in a nice, semi-detached house in good part of Liverpool.
When he was 15, he started listening to rock’n roll groups and decided to start his own group.
They often played small concerts and, at one of these, he met Paul McCartney. His aunt always
told him that he should concentrate on his schoolwork, but he didn’t listen to her which was
lucky, as John and Paul went on to become the main songwriters in the Beatles, the most famous
pop band of all time.
John’s mother came back into his life when he was about 17 and he visited her a lot because she
liked his music, unlike his aunt. Then, just as John’s relationship with his mother was becoming
very close, she was killed in an accident which affected John very badly and turned him into even
more of a rebel.

Questions:

1. When did John decide to start his own group?

2. Who did John meet with at one of their small concerts?

3. When did John’s mother come back into his life?

4. What was Aunt Mimi's attitude towards John's music?

5. What happened to John's mother?

Activity 2: Read the text and answer the question. Explain your reason in a few sentences.

1. What title can you give the text? Why?

WORKSHEET 2

Activity 1: Work in pairs. Imagine your partner is a famous musician. Ask your partner the

following questions. Write down his/her answers. Be prepared to present a brief summary about

your partner.

Interview Questions:

1. Who inspired you to make music? How?

2. What advice would you give to people who want to be musicians?

3. What is your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician?

4. Do you have any hobbies or interests apart from music?

5. If you weren't a musician, what would you want to be?

Activity 2: Write a letter to your favorite musician (about 350 words).
