Lesson: Grammar Explorer .

Consider the following sentences. Then find the relation between them

A. Algeria has many historical sites. B. Just few tourists visit Algeria.

*B is illogical and unexpected to A, the idea of B contrasts or concedes the idea of A.

*So, there is concession between A and B

Now choose the right word to link the previous sentences: as a result, although, because

- Although Algeria has many historical sites, just few tourists visit it.

*So, to express concession we use the following conjunctions;

Although, though, even though + S + V ………..

Despite the fact that, in spite of the fact that

N.B. These conjunctions can be used in the middle

e.g. Just few tourists visit Algeria although it has many historical sites.

Now consider this sentence and find out the difference between this one and the previous one

Despite/ In spite of the strength of ancient civilizations, they collapsed.

*Despite is followed by noun phrase

Note this: Despite the fact that ancient civilizations were strong, they collapsed.

*We can also express concession using the following prepositions;

Despite + Noun phrase

In spite of (noun, gerund, pronoun + noun)

Remark: We can also express concession using but, yet, however, nevertheless

- Algeria has many historical sites but just few tourists visit it.
- Ancient civilizations were strong yet they collapsed.
