TYPES OF GRIEVANCES

Documentation and Research Committee

ACADEMIC GRIEVANCES
There are two types of Academic Grievances.
Level 1 Academic Grievances are those concerning serious adverse decisions that will prevent
the student from continuing their progress toward a degree in good academic standing.
Level 2 Academic Grievances are those concerning decisions, while undesirable for the student,
do not prevent the student from continuing their progress toward a degree in good academic
standing.

The following are a few types of issues in academic grievances that may occur or rise under
Level 1 or Level 2 of Academic Grievances.

Issues about grades, exam procedures, excused absences, class policies, etc.
Presume the student has any concerns about the grading system, unfair or unjust exam
procedures, excused absences, or class policies that affect or may affect the student's academic
performance. In that case, they can relay this issue to the faculty members or class advisers, for
they have the primary authority and responsibility in these areas and are charged with carrying
out those responsibilities in a professional manner.

Issues about faculty performance or faculty behavior

If the student has any reasonable and appropriate issues in the performance or behavior of the
professor in the class, students may refer to this description of faculty rights and responsibilities.

Issues about course content, teaching methodology, etc.

Postulate that the student has any issue regarding the course content, teaching method, and
professor's strategy in class. Also, professors can use the lecture and other teaching methods (see
course syllabus to refer to this issue). Faculty members have primary authority and responsibility
in all these areas. If the student deems it necessary, they may then contact the department chair.
If unable to resolve the issue with the Chair, the student may contact the appropriate Dean's
office, where a written process of complaint or grievance will be employed. A student may also
continue the process to write to the Offices of the Chancellor or President, but those offices will
typically refer the issue back to the Dean's office.
Issues about academic probations, suspensions, etc.
If the student has any issues or appeals about student probations or suspensions, cases like this
are usually handled through the relevant Dean's office of each school or college and their phone
numbers and locations can be found in the Campus Directory.

Issues regarding Academic Misconduct.

If the student has academic dishonesty or cheating issues and would like to appeal or file a
motion against this.

Issues about class availability, times, etc.

If the student wishes to have a flexible schedule and number of units to take while working,
contact the appropriate departmental office first. The student may then contact the relevant
Dean's office if he or she so desires.

Failure to comply.
Students who fail to comply with such authorization may hold disciplinary operations.

NON-ACADEMIC GRIEVANCES
Issues regarding discrimination and/or sexual harassment
Suppose the student has sexual harassment or violent discrimination based on sex, gender
identity, disability, or even ethnic origin. If the student experienced any discrimination/
harassment in many circumstances, the student should consult with the engagement director for
guidance.

Issues regarding the usage of a student’s personal information

If the members of Administrative, Faculty, Student Council, and Organization officers used a
student’s personal information for their personal intentions, he/she must be held accountable by
the school’s administration.

Issues regarding intimidation/bullying

If a student experiences any form of intimidation and bullying by another student or by a
member of the faculty, the student is free to report the bully to the school’s authorities.

Issues regarding the students’ entitlement to CAS/SSC and other fees

The transparency of the CAS, SSC, and other organization with their budget is the student
body’s rights to avoid the misconception and misusage of the organizations’ funds.

Issues regarding a student’s safety, health, and wellbeing

Any activity that risks a students safety, health, and wellbeing inside the campus must be
prohibited.
