Directions:
You have drawn the layout of a fictional New England town. Now describe your New
England town in a paragraph. Be sure to include a description of the activities and uses
that occured in each of the buildings and places.

For example:
“In the center of the town is the green, also known as the commons. This area is used to
graze livestock and for the militia to practice on. At the southern edge of the town, next
to the river, is the Mill. The water from the river is used to drive the water wheel which
connects to the grinding stones. These grinding stones grind wheat for flour and corn for
cornmeal.”

Writing Notes:
● Use cardinal directions and relative location in describing the different buildings
and places.
● Write in the present tense as if you are an inhabitant of the town and you are
describing it to someone else from outside of the town.
● Bold the different buildings or locations the first time you mention them.
● Mention the name of your town, the name of the river and the street names.
● Write in the third person. Do not use “I”, “we” or “us”.
