Chapter 2:

Subjectivism - Relativism - Emotivism

Question 1: Do you agree that moral progress should be done to change the Islamic
cultural value system?

I believe that a moral progress should instantly be conducted to Islamic culture in specific
despite the fact that it may be challenging to do so. The reason is that even though one
country’s culture value system is often an asset to its people, Islamic culture on the other
hand brings hardship to not only one but majority of women here. A difference in gender
in my opinion should not be a discriminating factor and a thing to be ashamed or
regretful. Therefore, Islamic women deserves to have a rightful life and not be
treated as a commodity. Islamic women’s suffering results in their desire to the West to
experience the equality, which is normal here. This related to the second reason that
Islamic culture value system needs to be adjusted: the negative influence brought by
Islamic man to the West. As mentioned in the video, “it’s a grave mistake to deny that the
value system of the attackers” may be a factor that related to increasing social problems
(such as groping, harassments, assaults and rape). With the two mentioned
reasons, a moral progress should be done to change the Islamic culture value system from
my perspective to improve life of not only Islamic women but also Western women
so that everybody’s equality life would be natural instead of a grant.

Question 2: Express your own point of view about non-cognitivism (cultural relativism,
emotivism, subjectivism) in the line with moral progress in our society.

From my point of view, there are two sides of non-cognitivism in the line with moral
progress, which suggest we should carefully assess before voice out any changes.

First of all, non-cognitivism may bring an indecisiveness to the moral progress of any
culture that brings hardship to its people. Among non-cognitivism, culture relativism
implicates that moral progress that impossible as the view of an action is morally
right depends on one’s culture approve; subjectivism indicates that moral disagreement
between individuals is nearly impossible, which would not promote alternation; and
emotivism there is no true or false moral utterances, but rather expressions
of emotions or attitudes. Therefore, if a culture demands an immediate
change, non-cognitivism may not effectively foster.

On the other hand, as each culture has its own beliefs and ethics code, non-cognitivism
brings sympathies and understandings among the cultures. In this case, non-cognitivism
would benefit from the fact that every culture gains their own respects and appreciation.
