 Raiders of the Sulu Sea
o Background of the Author/Document
- Raiders of the Sulu Sea was published by Icelle Gloria D. Borja-Estrada with the
contributions of Dr. Samuel Tan, Margarita Cojuangco, and some of the International Asian
Historians. Icelle Borja-Estrada was an executive council member of the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts, she is a painter and a sculptor and also one of
Zamboanga City’s premier artist. Icelle Borja-Estrada was known for her conducted studies
about Zamboanga’s arts and culture. Dr. Samuel Tan is the author of “A History of the
Philippines,” while Margarita Cojuangco is a columnist and she is known for writing “Kris of
Valor” and the documentary was directed by Idzwan Othman. The documentary film depicts
how the Spaniards depended the city of Zamboanga’s Fort Pilar.

o Analysis of the data/arguments/facts presented


- The documentary addresses the Moro resistance versus the Spanish and American rules in
the Southern Philippines. The raiders came from different tribes in Sulu, the Ilanun,
Balangingi Sama and Tausug tribes are the ones involve in the slave raiding. The film talked
about the slave raiding of the tribes as they fought against the colonizers. It is said that the
said Fort Pilar was the last base of defense that was used to control the economy in the past.
The raids were fully authorized by the Sultan for some political and economic motives
