Prison Changes People's Behavior?

Research has shown that time spent in prison does not successfully

rehabilitate most inmates. According to the study conducted by the Museum

Criminal entity, 80% of the prisoners instead of being rehabilitated; they learn new

and better ways to commit crimes while serving their prison sentence. For

example, in the book “Les Misérables” by Victor Hugo; the character Jean Valjean

was in jail for a long time. When he was released, he performed more criminal acts

than when he was locked up. On the other hand, prisons try to offer better

rehabilitation services by providing them with education, practical workshops and

psychologists; so that they have a better chance to succeed and become better

citizens. However, these resources aren´t used in the best way, since the prisoners

take advantage of them to feed their desire to commit crimes; for example, they
p
have access to handicraft, and craft workshops that they use to camouflage

weapons, drugs and illegal objects. In conclusion, time behind bars pushes them

further into a life of crime, and the lessons they learn there aren´t enough to

change their desire to reoffend.
