The Analysis of “The World is an Apple”

Theme
The thought or theme of the story suggested was the world is only for powerful or rich. No
matter, how hard-working you are, as long as there are people who want to bring you down, in
just one mistake, your life will be change in an instant. In the story, Pablo stole only one apple
for his daughter, with that, he got fired in his job. The apple symbolizes the dishonest life lived
by Mario before. Mario done just because for survival but no matter what, he should not forget
that society expects him to confirm to its norm.

Plot
This is a story of how wrong decisions become greater burdens to a family. Mario’s family
happens to be in the lower class of the society. When Mario got home, Gloria saw Mario and she
was asking for money to feed children and he said that he has no maney because he did
something. Gloria didn’t believe on what Mario said and she demand to tell her the truth. He
answered he lost his job making her shocked. She questioned how he lost his job and Mario
answered he lost his job by stealing an apple which making her more shocked. Gloria said how
can he lost his job by just taking one apple not a dozen and he answered that he just saw it rolling
and putting it inside his bag because Tita would love to have it. Mario told his wife that not to
worry because he found a new job. Suddenly, Pablo was there ruining the whole conversation
and asked them if how is there daughter doing and he’ll loan a few pesos to help. When Gloria
heard that Mario’s new job was with Pablo, she told him right away that it’s a bad doing and
risky. Mario didn’t listen and walks away with Pablo and he told his wife not to worry because
he will come back. Gloria cries and shouts for Mario but he didn’t turn his back to his wife.

Characters
Mario - The father of the story, husband of Gloria. He is known for his bad doings but strive
hard to had a decent job and change his life for his wife and her daughter. But there are
circumstances that put you in no choice, Mario go back to his old ways of life.
Gloria - wife of Mario. The very good and lovable woman who wants just a simple yet
decent life. She is the reason why Mario changed because of her unconditional love for him.
Pablo - The old friend of Mario, the one that drive Mario to go back to their old and bad
doings. He wants easy and dishonesty money, that Mario had lived before.
