The portrayal of human communication through comics are becoming progressively in
favour nowadays. This actively illustrates that the advantage of representation with incredible
similitudes and character-driven comics can make communication more attainable and draw in
for a more extensive crowd at the same time. Study findings by Jagannath M. Muzumdar (2017)
showed that the flyer in the form of comic was given positive feedback as compared to flyer in
for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the Oxford dictionary,
comics are defined as humorous, making you laugh and connected with comedy. The word
comic originated from the word kõmos in Latin. Cartoons printed in newspapers were a
forerunner of today's comics. Greg Hayman and Henry John Pratt (2005) referred to comics as
pictorial narrative and a sequence of discrete, juxtaposed images that encompass a narrative,
either in their own right or when merged with text.

It is prevalently accepted that the stories depicted in the comics are deemed to be distant
from real-world issues as people use comedy as an escape and some view comics as pastime for
children. A significant finding by Frank J (1949) highlighted that comics don’t act as catalysts
when it comes to either misdeeds or misdemeanours. However, comics help in mental evolution
in youngsters in their way of life. Taking everything into account, comics are said to shape the
real world of the audience while providing a critical mirror of their cultural aspects and society.
This can be seen through the humble beginnings of Hogan’s Alley by Richard Felton Outcault
(1897) featuring the famous Yellow Kid. Newspaper comic strips such as Kee’s world, It’s a
Durian Life and Garfield are loved by Malaysians back in the days are usually created to be
relatable. These types of comics that can be found on The Star newspaper customarily touch on
politicized issues and everyday matters such as water supply disruption, football season etc.

Comic strips are made cut to the chase and comprehensible for the targeted audience.
They served to entertain and attract their targeted audience with characters, arts style, and text
cues. The images printed or drawn in the comics are designed to be seen all at once by order.
Instead of skimming the whole page, comics help readers to ingest context at a more relaxed
pace. The attraction of comics would help promote literacy especially with people that have little
to no interest in reading. However, John T. Guthrie (2007) stated that poor readers benefit more
from reading books than from reading comics. However, it was believed that the successful
spread of Buddhism throughout East Asia is heavily influenced by Indian proto-comics. Not
forgetting the famous Mao Zedong who used graphic language to promote the idea of
communism resulting in Milo Manara, a member of Maoist group from Italy to become one of
the legendary comic artists in the world.

Back in the days, McAllister (1992) stated that the primary connotation of the comic
book is that it is a medium and format for children. Despite the success of graphic language in
comics, the unbounded imagination is far from reality and is said to be part of the entertainment
world. According to Jungst (2010), the idea of fun and comedy is no incentive for universal
acceptance of comics with politicized issues. The over-stigmatization of comics that are deemed
to be manipulative and not good enough for the discussion of serious matters are resulting in
present disadvantages of comics.

To conclude, a comic or comics, often known as comic strips, is a storytelling style that
mixes written text with graphical language. Comics are made up of a sequence of interconnected
illustration and text combinations. Every single image is in stark opposition to the others. This
sequential sequence is in respect to the preceding items to create a reference chain in comparison
to television shows and sitcoms, for example, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. As opposed to comic books, comic
strips don't have a consistent storyline with the primary characters cast.
