Highway (Project Phase 1)

I. Provide the necessary answers with complete drawing and complete solution.

35% - completeness, cleanliness, drawing

65% - accuracy and correctness of detailed solution

1. The highway engineer is planning to design three simple curves that are connected to each other such
that the first and second form a compound curve while the second and the third form a reversed curve.
The distance between the point of curvature and the point of tangency of the compound curve which is
also the point of reversed curvature of the reversed curve is 485.025 meters. If the angle of convergence
between the second and the third tangents is 15˚, I1 = 45˚, R1 = 190.986 m, I2 = 60˚, R3 = 159.155 m and
stationing at PC is 0 + 520;

a. Determine the stationing at PT at the end of the long chord. (Ans. 1 + 070)

b. Determine the angle between the long chord of the compound curve and the first tangent. (Ans.
61˚10’)

c. Determine the angle between the long chord of the compound curve and the second tangent.
(Ans. 43˚50’)

2. DPWH designed a reversed curve with diverging tangents to connect three traverse lines for a portion
of the proposed highway. The lines T10 – T11 is 185 m, T11 – T12 is 122.40 m, and T12 – T13 is 285 m. The
azimuths are due east, 62˚ and 122˚ respectively.

Type of Pavement = Item 311 (Portland Cement)

Number of lanes = 2 lanes
Width of pavement = 3.05 m per lane
Thickness of pavement = 200 mm
Unit Cost = P 460.00 per square meter

It is necessary that the PRC (Point of Reversed Curve) must be one-fourth (1/4) the distance of T 11 – T12
from T11.

a. Compute the radius of the first curve. (Ans. 122.73 m)

b. Compute the radius of the second curve. (Ans. 159 m)

c. Compute the cost of the concrete pavement along the curves (reversed) from the PC to the PT
based on the given highway cost index and specifications. (Ans. P 635,508.40)
3. Two converging tangents have azimuth of 300˚ and 90˚ respectively, while that of the common
tangent is 320˚. The distance from the point of intersection of the tangents to the PI of the 2 nd curve is
100 m, while the stationing of PI of the first curve is 10 + 432.24. If the radius of the first curve is 285.40
m;

a. Determine the radius of the second curve. (Ans. 205.59m)

b. Determine the stationing of PRC. (Ans. 10 + 481.54)

c. Determine the stationing of PT. (Ans. 10 + 660.95)
