TITLE OR TOPIC: NAPIER GRASS AS BIOGAS

PROJECT SITE/ LOCATION: LIVESTOCK RESOURCE CENTER, Barangay Irawaan,
Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
PROJECT DURATION: 3 to 4 weeks
OBJECTIVES AND SIGNIFICANCE:
1. To produce a low-cost, valuable green energy using Napier grass and help in
reducing pollution in the environment.
2. A biogas which also can use for healthy cooking alternative like for LPG.
3. To produce a biogas that does not emit bad smell in the environment which people
can inhale.
4. To have considerable quantity of environment protection.
METHODOLOGY / PROCEDURES:
1. Harvesting of Napier grass. It is good when Napier grass cut at 45-day-old mature
stage. Transport the grass into the site and let the air dried the Napier grass.
2. Chop the Napier grass using shredder machine into small pieces. Add some liquid
to the chopped Napier grass to make it easier to process (30 kg of Napier grass and
60 L of working volume, estimate) and prepare it for the anaerobic digestion
process.

(Anaerobic Digestion Process is a biological process which organic matter

degraded by microorganism in the absence of oxygen. It converted organic
materials into biogas through four stages: Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis, Acetogenesis,
and Methanogenesis.)

3. Fermentation conducted around 37°C (Room temperature) because it needs warm

conditions along the process.
4. The anaerobic digestions process takes about three weeks in a tank to make the
actual biogas production. It will undergo the four stages of anaerobic digestion
process until it reaches the last stage and will give methane production.
5. When actual biogas production is made, the impurities and carbon dioxide of the
biomass is removed and the gas is purified.
6. The produced methane gas will directly go to the placed storage drum (no leakage)
and ready to use.
