Prometer 100 DLMS Communication Protocol
1. Introduction
This document describes how to read data from the Prometer 100 using DLMS / COSEM. It’s not a guide for the
implementation of the server.
For DLMS / COSEM, this document describes the specifics for Prometer 100. For general information about the
protocol, refer to the standard documents (white, green and blue books from the DLMS User Association). The
implementation in Prometer 100 is based on Blue Book 10th edition and Green Book 7th edition.
DLMS / COSEM are supported on the optical (IEC1107), RS232, RS485 and Ethernet.
This document describes only meter reading, it is not intended for meter configuration. When configuring the meter,
other aspects have to be taken into consideration, not mentioned in this document.
1.1 Baud rate changeover
The baud rate on RS232 / RS485 communication ports can be changed.
Permanent (default) baud rate change can be change using configuration tool (M-Cubed 100). By default it is 9600 bps.
Temporary baud rate change can be done at the time of reading by changing the value of baud rate attribute of IEC
HDLC setup class. First HLS shall connect to Meter with default baud rate than change the baud rate and disconnect the
connection. Now connect Meter with new baud rate and do activity at new baud rate. Meter will restore back the default
baud rate after disconnection or communication idle mode timeout.
Using the optical interface complies with the standard which means the communication always starts at 300 bps.
2. Terminology
COSEM Companion Specification for Energy Metering
DLMS Device Language Message Specification
HDLC High Level Data Link Control
THD Total Harmonic Distortion
HLS High Level Software

4. System Architecture
Prometer 100 have multiple ports, namely:
• a 1107/ANSI local optical port – DLMS MODE E sign on
• a RS-232 remote port, which can be connected to modem (3G, GPRS or GSM) – HDLC DLMS
• a RS-485 for daisy chaining– HDLC DLMS
• a TCP/IP port – TCP DLMS

Prometer 100 DLMS Communication Protocol
All ports are independent and can be communicated simultaneously
5. Metering HDLC protocol using protocol Mode E for direct local data
exchange
5.1 Communication mode
Prometer 100 supports DLMS / COSEM HDLC mode E of 62056 part 21 - programming mode.
5.2 Connecting
When connecting to the meter using mode E programming mode the meter serial number is used as the device address.
The meter answers with an identification message where the manufacturer’s identification is “CWI”.

6. Metering HDLC / IPv4 protocol (DLMS / COSEM)
6.1 General
Prometer 100 supports referencing of COSEM objects using logical (long) names over HDLC and Ethernet (TCP/IP).
Physical layer uses 1 start bit, 8 data bits, no parity and one stop bit for HDLC.
Supported baud rates for HDLC depend on the specific port and for Ethernet (TCP/IP) it depends on the network; see
Prometer 100 User Manual for details.
All three modes of HDLC addressing is supported (1, 2 or 4 byte). The normal restrictions apply for restricted addresses
according to the standard.
For HDLC the upper HDLC address (logical device address) is always 1 (Management Logical Device).
For TCP/IP the WPORT is always 0 (Management Logical Device).
To configure the lower HDLC device address (when using 2-byte or 4-byte addressing) for a meter, connect using ‘M-
Cubed 100’ and select the Communication section. The device address is available for configuration as ‘physical
address’ for all the communication ports (accept optical, for which device address is not required).
6.2 DLMS Services
Prometer 100 supports the GET, SET and ACTION services, as per the DLMS green book.
6.3 Security
There are six application associations available in Prometer100. Their characteristics are as follows:

6.4.6 Profiles (GET Services)
Historic data like Load profiles etc. are supported by the Profile generic Interface Class (IC 7). This object supports
capture of meter object attributes at specific intervals or on demand. The captured data is stored in the buffer attribute
(Attribute 2) of the Profile generic class. This class also supports Selective access to filter the buffer data in response to
GET requests. There are two mechanisms for selective access viz. Selective access by Entry and Selective Access by
Range.
Prometer 100 supports the Selective Access by Range for Logger profile and Daily energy snapshot profile. Meter
supports Selective Access by Entry for Billing data profile and Event log profiles.
In case of Selective access by Range, Prometer 100 supports the selective access as an instance of the Clock interface
class (IC-8) and the date-time attribute of the object is captured in the buffer.

[Link] Billing
These are parameters identified for accounting / billing purposes. These shall be generated by the meter for each billing
cycle and stored in the memory. The set of data for last 15 cycles shall be stored in the memory. At the end of each
cycle corresponding set of data shall be readable by the HOST from remote.
Energy objects are available as total (E = 0) and depending on meter configuration as eight different rate registers (E
from 1 to 8). The configuration for what energy objects are available as rate registers is set in the Time of Use node, the
TOU tab, in M-Cubed 100 (ConfigView).
Energy objects can also be retrieved for the current billing period (F = 255) or for one of 15 historical periods (F from
101 to 115). F=101 identifies the most recent billing period.
All energy objects are implemented using the DLMS interface class data, Register and extended register.
Energy objects always as A = 1 and B = 0, E and F as described above. Normal energy registers have D = 8, while
maximum demand has D = 6. C should have a value according to the following table:

[Link] Load profiles (loggers)
This is an array of parameters identified for capturing and storing at specified time intervals or capture times. The
capture times shall be configurable. The tables lists the parameters whose profile (survey) is to be captured and stored in
the meter as per set capture time period. The profiles shall be readable at any time by the HOST from remote for any
specified range and time.
The data stored in the array shall be the instantaneous / average / maximum / minimum value for the captured time
block and stored at the end of that block, except for energy values. The energy entries are the consumption during
respective capture time block and posted at the end of that block. The array of data shall be retained inside the meter
memory for the configured number of days.
The block load profiles shall not store or return values (typically zero values) for conditions where the meter is powered
down for a full day, where a full day is defined as the 24 hour period from midnight 00 Hrs to the next midnight 00 Hrs.
Under such conditions the block load profile for the entire 24 Hour period shall not be stored nor padded with zero
entries. However if the meter is powered up even for a small amount of time (sufficient for it to boot up and record the
Power up event) during the 24 Hour period, it shall store and return the Block load profile for the entire 24 hour
duration.
The load profiles can be read as a whole or by using selective access on attribute 2. The selective access must be by
range (access selector 1) and use the clock (obis [Link].0.255, attribute 2) as restricting object.
A load profile (logger) entry always contains the timestamp (clock attribute 2) and then follows the configured energy /
instantaneous parameters.
What to store in the respective load profile is configured under the Logger node in M-Cubed 100 (ConfigView).
Attribute 3 on a profile generic object supplies a list of the objects captured by the profile.

[Link] Daily energy snapshots
The daily energy snapshot profile can be read as a whole or by using selective access on attribute 2. The selective
access must be by range (access selector 1) and use the clock (obis [Link].0.255, attribute 2) as restricting object.
A daily energy snapshot profile entry always contains the timestamp (clock attribute 2). Then follows the data
configured to be captured according to the meters configuration.
What to store in the respective daily energy snapshot profile is configured under the daily energy snapshot node in M-
Cubed 100 (ConfigView).
Attribute 3 on a profile generic object supplies a list of the objects captured by the profile.

[Link] Event logs
Any abnormal or a tamper condition is defined as an Event. The meters shall identify, resolve and log both occurrence
and restoration of such events. The meters shall also capture some of the parameters at the instance of log. This
specification has identified the events to be logged and the parameters to be captured for each of those events.
The sub groups are:
1. Voltage related events
2. Current related events
3. Power Failure related events
4. Transactional events
5. Other events
6. Non rollover events
7. Communication events
8. Miscellaneous Electrical Events
9. Diagnostic Event
10. Voltage THD Events
11. Current THD Events
12. Sag Events
13. Swell Events
14. Voltage Cut Events
15. Voltage Unbalance Events
The number of events stored in each log shall be 100. The event conditions identified / logged are listed in Table 6-30 to
Table 6-44 covering all the subgroups. For each type of event condition the parameters captured are listed in Table 6-46
to Table 6-52.
The rules for access of attribute 2 are the same for event logs as for load profiles (see section [Link] Load profiles
(loggers)).
An event log entry contains a timestamp (clock attribute 2) followed by a 32 bit word describing the event.
