The universal blood type is the type O, because it can be used in transfusions for any blood type. Type O
is routinely in short supply and in high demand by hospitals and because it is the most common blood
type and because type O negative blood is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions
and for immune deficient infants.

23. Which blood type is the universal recipient? Why?

Type AB-positive blood is called the "universal recipient" type because a person who has it can receive
blood of any type. This type may be used to classify blood in an emergency, blood type tests are always
done to prevent transfusion reactions.
