Aerodynamics, Assignment #1
Due date: October 30, 2021, 18:00

Values in the questions are given with letters corresponding to a certain number.
Therefore, replace the letters in the values with numbers according to the notation given
below.
Student Number = ABCDEFGHI
1) Determine the velocity required for take off for an aircraft with the following characteristics.
Aircraft mass: 7HG0 kg
Wingspan: 1I m
Wing shape: rectangular
Wing chord length: 1.H m
Wing airfoil: NACA 4415
Wing angle of attack: 𝑰 × 𝟎. 𝟓 + 𝟓 degrees
Hint: Check NACA charts for required parameters.

2) Estimate the drag force on the fuselage shown below for a cruising speed of 𝑈 m/s at 10,000
m.

For the values of U and W use the digits of student ID number

For example, ID: 110140194 →

U = (1+1+0+1+4+0+1+9+4) x 10 = 210 m/s

W = (1+1+0+1+4+0+1+9+4) = 21 m

Hint 1: To calculate the drag force split the fuselage into 4 parts: front hemisphere,
cylindrical body, vertical stabilizer, back hemisphere. Model the front and back hemispheres
as flow over a sphere. For simplicity treat the cylindrical body and vertical stabilizer as flat
plates.
Hint 2: Use Cd vs Reynolds number graphs for sphere and flat plate. If your Reynolds
number is greater/smaller than the Cd vs Reynolds graph range, you can instead use the
greatest/smallest number available on the graph.

3) A simplified model of a wing section is shown in the following figure. In this problem we
assume steady, incompressible, inviscid flow of air over the two dimensional wing section.
The wing is composed of 4 flat panels and the velocity over each panel is constant over the
length of the individual panel. Flow velocity right next to each plate is given in the figure.
Calculate the lift force generated by this wing section. The depth of the wing section is 1 m.

Air density is 1.2GH kg/m3
