DISEASES AND DISORDERS CAUSED BY POOR SANITATION

Sanitation applies to the public health issues of safe drinking water and proper care and
disposal of human waste and sewage. Hand washing with soap, as well as preventing human
contact with feces, are also part of sanitation. What happens when sanitation is poor? Poor
sanitation was also related to the spread of diseases including cholera, diarrhea, dysentery,
hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio, as well as exacerbated stunting. Due to consequences such as
anxiety, the risk of sexual harassment, and missed educational opportunities, inadequate
sanitation has a negative impact on human well-being, social and economic growth.
Here are the “Common Water and Sanitation-Related Diseases” Diarrhea. It is the most
common problem regarding poor sanitation and water. It can cause dehydration or worst, death.
Cholera. Most cases of cholera that cause symptoms cause mild or moderate diarrhea that's often
hard to tell apart from diarrhea caused by other problems. Others develop more-serious signs and
symptoms of cholera, usually within a few days of infection. Symptoms of cholera infection can
include: Diarrhea. Trachoma. Trachoma is a viral eye infection transmitted primarily by poor
hygiene caused by inadequate clean water sources and poor sanitation in the area. Typhoid. It is
a bacterial infection that is caused by ingesting contaminated food or water. The common
symptoms are headaches, nausea, and loss of appetite. Intestinal Worms. These are common for
children because they engage contact with soil or by eating contaminated food.

To avoid poor sanitation, you should have access to safe drinking water (e.g.
water safety planning the management of water from the source to tap); household water
treatment and safe storage), access to improved sanitation facilities, hand washing with
soap at critical times (e.g. after toilet use and before the preparation of food) Improve
sanitation facilities by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe
enclosure. Promote good hygiene habits through education. Proper hand washing with
soap and water can reduce diarrhea cases by up to 35 percent.
