 Negros Oriental is culturally-oriented


towards Cebu. Most of the people who
inhabit the coastal towns speak
Cebuano. Other dialects spoken are
Tagalog and Ilonggo.
 The tagline of Negros Oriental is “Whale
and Dolphin Haven.”
 The Provincial Government of Negros
Oriental was established on May 1, 1901.
 As a whole, the Roman Catholic religion
still claims the biggest number of followers
of 893,726 representing 79.160% of the total
population.

 Based on the 2015 Census of Population (2015


POPCEN), the province of Negros Oriental
posted a total population of 1,354,995 persons
as of August 1, 2015.
 The Dumaguete Bell Tower, built in 1811, used
to warn residents of raiding pirates.
 Dumaguete, the Provincial Capital of Negros
Oriental, is known as the City of Gentle
People because of the kind and hospitable
inhabitants. The word Dumaguete is derived
from the term dumaguit in the local dialect,
meaning “to kidnap.” At one time, this term
referred to the numerous pirates and
buccaneers that attacked the city.

 The twin Lakes Balinsasayao and Danao,


northwest of Dumaguete, are small
adjacent crater lakes on an elevation of
300 meters amidst the lush forest.
 The Palimpinon Hot Springs, 10 kilometers
from the city, come from crevices along
the Ocoy river bank.
 Silliman University in Dumaguete, founded by
American missionaries in 1901, is the only
Protestant university in the country. Its 35-
hectare area is a bird sanctuary. Silliman Hall
serves as a museum that houses an extensive
collection of locally-excavated artifacts,
Sung and Ming dynasty porcelain, and
voodoo paraphernalia from Siquijor.

 The province is consisted of 6 cities, 19


municipalities and 557 barangays, with its
capital named Dumaguete.
 Buglasan Festival, also known as
“The Festival of Festivals”, is one of the most
waited festivals in Negros Oriental. It is
celebrated annually in Dumaguete City in the
middle of October since 2002.
