We determine the Ecell of the reaction using the nernst equation.
We start by determining the standard Ecell of the reaction. The Hg decreased in oxidation number, from +2 it became 0 so this means that Hg underwent reduction process. Cr on the other hand, increased in oxidation number, from 0 it became +3 which means that in underwent oxidation process. We minus the Ecell of reduction with Ecell of the oxidation to get the standard Ecell We then determine the n, which would be the number of electrons transferred in the redox reaction. We do this by multiplying the two equations so that they will have the same number of electrons. We found that there are 6 electrons transferred We proceed by determining the Q expression for the redox reaction the product side is in the numberator while the reactant side is in the denominator. Note that we do not include compound that is in solid phase or liquid phase in the Q expression. We combine the values we obtained in the nernst equation to get the Ecell of the reaction The Ecell value we obtained is a positive value which indicates that the reaction is spontaneous
