Job NO 1665
It was requested thet from the core of D.DeH. #1 sexplés be
‘selected for petrographic examinecion, Thin sections were made :
of seven samples and their description follows, *
The rock is porphyritic with a very fine ground mass. Tt
appears that it is either of near-surface intrusive or pnssibly
extrusive origin. - wet
ge .
Alteration of the constituents increases with depth. sulfide, =.
mineralizetion occurs as disseminations but ic more frequently | «s
associated with quarts in fractures.
The suffix to the job number indicates the depth from which
e@ the sample originated.
1665/5
Hier? Phenocrysts of predominantly plagioclase, some orthoclase and
quarts up to 5 mm, but mainly below 2 umoccur in a very fine
grained matrix which contains quarty and feldepers. Feldspar
as phencerysts and in the matrix are moderately soricitized.
Sericite aise occurs as amsil shreds throughout. The quarts
phenocrysts are corroded. Scme epidote occurs se stall grains
and localiy appears to be related to a former mafic minéral.
A few shreds of muscovite are present.
Graina’ of am opaque mineral are disseminated and, along frac-
tures, but occur preferentially with forser mafic constituente,
The very fine grained matrix suggests either near-surface intru-
sive or extrusive origin.‘VADO » CAJAHARCA D.D.He#l
Petrographic Examination of Core Samp!
Dese.: Porphyritic Granodiorite or Rhyodacite moderate sericitisation
™ of feldspar, complete alteration of mafic minerals.
1665/10
Wior.: Phenocryats of quartz and plagioclase up to 3 mm occur in a very
fine grained matrix of mainly quarts and feldspar.
Sericite occurs as shreds in the matrix and in plagioclase phe-
noeryste. Some of the plagioclase vhenocrysts appear to be mo~
derately kaolimitizede
Epidete is present throughout but mainly along fractures, Seri~
@ eitization is quite intense along fractures.
An opaque mineral, mainly pyrite, is also related to fractures,
Some oxidation of this sulfite is evident by limonite stains in
the rock near sulfide grains.
Texture is very similar to that of 1665/5.
Porphyritic Quartzdiorite or Dacite; moderate sericitizetion of
feldspar, completely altered mafic mineral.
Few phenocrysts of quarts, plagioclase and bleached hornblende
occur in a very fine grained matrix ef quarts and feldsper. The
quarts phencorysts are corroded, placioclase is cloudy, possibly
due to incipient alteration.
@ Shreds of muscovite and sericite are commone Sone muscovite is
an alteration product of hornblende, it is commonly accompanied
‘by an opaque mineral, possibly magnetite.
Calcite occurs as alteration product and in some cases is asso~
ciated with epidote, possibly after hornblende. Some pyrite is
disseminated.
eget Porphyritic Quartadiorite or Dacite, weak to moderate alterations
1665/20
Yicret Few phenocrysts of quarts and plagioclase, on the average 2 mm
and smaller, and some muscovite flakes occur in a very fine
grained matrix of quartz and feldspar. A few phenocrysts of
formerly hornblende consist now of epidote and calcite or chite
mica.
Quarts is generally corroded, plagioclase is uoderately sericitized
and seussuritized, locally calcite or epidote are the only altera-
tion producte of the feldepar.Deacet

Micros
Dese.t
Mior.:
The matrix contains a moderate amount of opaque minerals, both
pyrite and hematite and/or magnetite.
Local concentrations of calcite are believed to be fracture control~
led. A few small quarts veinlets exict,
Porphyritic Quartzdiorite or Dacite, moderately altered.
The host appears much like the above destribed rocks, except that
in this specimen it has undergone very strong alteration. The fine
banding noted macroscopically is produced by alternating layers of
quarts, ‘The banded structure is a vein,
Part of the vein was originally chalcedony which is now recrystallized,
a colored banding can still be recognized,
‘The vein quartz consists of very fins grained mosaics (recrystallized)
which are interbanded with fine grained comb quartz.
Calcite and some sericite ocour in very minor amounts. Sulfides
(pyrite and chalcopyrite?) are present throughout but tend to be more
frequently associated with the very fine grained mosaic of quartne
Quarts vein with sulfides in strongly altered rocks
Phénocrysts of corroded quarts and strongly altered plagioclase
vceur ina fine grained matrix, Occasional phenocryats of a former
mafic mineral consiat now of either a "white mica" or nearly opaque
material, Plagioclase is mainly sericitized, seme saucsuritization
fe found also.
Caleite is prevent in the matrix but also as alteration of plagioclase
phenocrysts.
The grain sige of the matrix is very smalls identification of all
constituents is not possible. Quartz, plagioclase, sericite and
calcite are common end probably the major constituents of the matrix,
Opaque minerals occur disseminated, they are magnetite and/or henatite
and some pyrite.
Porphyritic Quartadiorite or Dacite, with fairly intense alteration of
Plagioclase end mafic constituents.1665/1135,
Misrx: Phenocrysts of plagioclase, quarts and former mafic mineral occur
ur 4m very fine grained matrix.
Plagioolase is in part idlomorphicy quarts 4s corroded and rounded.
The former mafic mineral consists now of calcite, chlorite, hematite
and/or magnetite and "white mica". Feldspar is alnost completely
altered to mainly caloite, and very minor sericite.
The matrix is very fine grained and appears also strongly altered.
Presence of kaolinite in the matrix is suggested.
Descet Porphyritic Quartsdiorite or Dacite, strong alteration of feldspar and
mafic mineral.
