Parts of the Essay and its functions

An essay is a text that explores, analyzes, and exposes some information about a topic through
argumentation. Then we can say that an essay is a proposal for reflection and analysis. An essay
has many characteristics for example It offers freedom in the choice of topic, focus, and style, its
length varies according to the type of essay, they can be expository, argumentative, reflective.
According to Knight, Parsons (2003) the parts of an essay are three and these are the introductory
paragraph or introduction, the body paragraph, and the concluding paragraph.

At the same time, Mackenzie (2007) assures that the actual length of an essay is not particularly
relevant. This author points out that: the introductory paragraph is relatively short, it is the
beginning and invites a reader to proceed. the purpose of this section is to introduce the topic.

The body paragraph is longer than the introduction paragraph or conclusion, the purpose of this
section is to provide information and arguments that follow logically from the main point
identified in the introduction.

The purpose of a conclusion is to summarize the main points of the essay and identify the broader
significance of the topic or issue.

To conclude the essay is an important tool for education as well as for other specialties. The essay
can be written on almost any topic, but it also has a pre-established organization that allows its
understanding. The essay with the introduction, development, and conclusion requires skills to
know how to express and conjugate your ideas because the whole topic has to be synchronized
and organized resulting in a consistent and fluid investigation.
