Learning Activity 1

. Understand the meaning of genetics

Answer: It means it is where it all started, came from, begin with, form of life in this
world.

. Appreciate the contributions of scientist involved in the creation of genetics.

Answer: As the genetics form it will all started in the experimentation, certain studies
and discoveries of the scientists way back . Like human , plants and animals also have
genes that came from the DNA and mutate to form another plant. Until now there is still
continuous studies about the genetics of the plants .

. Select from the enlisted applications of genes the most applicable in your field and
why.
Answer: For me it could be the studying inheritance pattern since genetics is all about
the genes of a plant ,animals and how they produce same like genes and because
inheritance pattern is study where Inheritance includes the, studying seven traits: plant
height, pod shape, pod color, seed shape, seed color, flower color etc. of a single plant .

. List down the branch of genetics which it has contributions in your field.
Answer: Molecular genetics- is an interdisciplinary sub-branch of genetics dealing with
the study of the structure and function of DNA as well as genes (at a molecular level)
using techniques such as Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing.
Using the molecular genetics techniques one can screen pathogenic mutation, detect
SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism), minor deletion or duplication at the DNA level.
further, gene expression studies are also possible using molecular genetic techniques.
A state of the art technique, DNA sequencing is powerful enough to find new variations
or mutations. Polymerase chain reaction, gene cloning, DNA sequencing, and DNA
quantification are some of the techniques used in molecular genetic analysis.
DNA cloning - is a traditional method for the synthesis of DNA. Using a cloning vector
our sequence of interest can be synthesized by the bacterial artificial chromosome. The
method is time-consuming and not so accurate. It includes tedious steps like cell culture
and isolation.
DNA sequencing- The method of reading the sequence of DNA using a computational
tool. In this method, we can actually analyze any variation or new mutation in our
sequence of interest using the fluoro-labeled dNTPs.
Cytogenetics is a sub-branch of genetics including the study of inheritance through
chromosomal analysis utilizing techniques such as karyotyping, chromosomal staining
and chromosomal banding, and FISH. Structural and numerical chromosomal
abnormalities can be screened using cytogenetic techniques.
