CHAPTER ONE

n a little kingdom graced witk rolling kills, spar¬

kling rivers, and kountiful forests, tkere once
lived a lovely young princess named Snow Wkite.
Snow Wkite was not only kind kut keautiful as
well. Her kair was tke deepest ekony, ker com¬
plexion tke purest ivory.
Snow Wkite^s fatker, tke king, was dead, and so ske lived
in tke palace witk ker stepmotker, tke queen. And altkougk
tke queen was also very keautiful, ker keauty was only skin
deep. Inside ske was cold and keartless and as evil as an ugly
o Id witcli.
TLe queen was very jealous of Snow Wkite^s keauty. So
muck so tkat ske forced tke little princess to dress in tattered
rags and made ker work long kours as a scullery maid.
Tke queen tkougkt tkat, disguised in tkis way. Snow
WkiteT keauty could never rival ker own. Still, tkat wasn t
enougk to satisfy ker vanity.
In a dark and forekoding part of tke castle, tke queen
kept a magic mirror. And every day she would stand kefore
tke ornate mirror and ckant, "Magic mirror on tke wall, wko
is tke fairest of tkem all?"

(
And every day, tke surface of the mirror would swirl like
a dark whirlpool, and a grim face would appear, as if rising
from the depths.
“You are the fairest one of a 11/' tke face would answer.
Tke queen would smile and nod and he content.
As time went on, however. Snow whitens keauty h ecame
more and more apparent in spite of the queen^s efforts to hide
it. So it was that on one bright and sunny day, when the queen
ashed the mirror her usual question, it replied in its deep,
somher voice:

Pamed is thy beauty, Majesty,

hut hold—a lovely maid I see—
rags cannot hide her gentle grace.
Alas, she is more fair than thee.

Th e queen stiffened in shocked surprise. Then she lowered

her eyebrows and said, ^^Alas for her. Reveal her name.^^
And the face in the mirror answered:

Lips red as a rose, hair black as ebony,

skin w kite as snow . . .

^^Snow white! the queen hissed.

At the very moment the queen was consulting her magic mirror.
Snow white was husy scrubbing the stone steps of the courtyard
below. Tke work was hard, hut Snow White performed the
task in good spirits. And now she sang prettily as a flock of
white doves fluttered around her, cooing and bo kk ing.

Wken tke kuntsman arrived, tke queen commanded kim

''We'll clean up and surprise them!" Snow white clapped

Again the animals nodded as if they understood Snow
white's intentions.
"Well, let's not just all stand here," she said with a good-
natured laugh. "Let's get husy!"
And in no time at all they did.
The squirrels scurried cheerfully around the cottage,
sweeping the floor and dusting off the furniture wi th th eir
hushy tails.
The raccoons helped Snow white wash the clothes hy
nihhing the garments together between their paws to get them
sparkling clean.
1 he h irds eagerly flew up to every nook and cranny in the
ceiling, pulling down cohwehs and halls of dust with their strong
heaks.
The deer and the rahhits pushed and pulled tables and
chairs into their proper places.
Even the tiny chipmunks gladly helped, carrying dirty

depositing them in a wooden sink to he washed.
With everyone doing their sh are, the work went smoothly
throughout the afternoon as the sun slowly lowered to the west.

while all this was going on, the people who lived in the cottage
were in the hills not far away, digging for jewels in a deep, dark
mine. There were seven men in all, and they were dwarfs. And
in spite of their different personalities, the dwarfs got along
quite well together and worked side hy side in perfect harmony.
As they swung their picks and shovels, they sang a work song
that echoed hack to them throughout the caverns and tunnels
o ftke mine.
Just as they started to sing another chorus, a clock in the
mine struck five. One of the dwarfs looked up and cried,
^^Heigh-ho!^^ The others quickly collected their tools and
marched out of the mine in sing le hie. They traveled along a
well-worn path that wound through woods and over roc ky kills
and small ravines. And all the while, they whistled and sang,
content to he heading home after a good day^s work.

Back at the cottage. Snow white and the animals looked

around with pride at the sparkling-clean room. ^^Now let^ s see
what^s upstairs, she said.
Snow white led the way up the small wooden steps as
the animals followed behind. She saw that there was a bedroom
with seven little beds in it. On each wooden bed hoard, a name
