Laboratory #7: MOS AMPLIFIERS

1. Objective:

In this experiment, you will study MOS amplifiers. You will design an NMOS amplifier and get hands
on training on MOS transistor circuits.

Equipment and circuit components: Signal Generator, Power supply with variable voltage, Multimeter,
Breadboard, NMOS transistors (2N7000), Resistors (of specified values in the manual).

2. Preliminary work:

2.1. Study the data sheet of 2N7000 transistor. From the data sheet, extract the parameters (VTH,
NCOX, W/L) that you will need to analyze MOS circuits and need to run spice simulations.

2.2. Design the following NMOS amplifier with gain of 50. For the NMOS transistor, use 2N7000
parameters that you found. Choose R1, R2, RD and RS properly to achieve the desired gain. Assume
the supply voltage is 15V.

2.2. Verify your design using SPICE.

3. Lab tasks:

In the lab you will be provided 2N7000. The pin diagram is shown below:

1
Task 1.
 Construct the circuit shown in Cir 3.1 with 2N7000 NMOS transistor.
 By applying a sinusoidal voltage to the input, observe the output.
 Note the output voltage level and calculate the gain.

Task 2.
 Add a load resistor at the output (start with 1 meg).
 Repeat the gain measurement again.
 Use the following resistors (510K, 330K, 100K, 75K, 51K, 33K, 22K, 13K, 10K, 9K, 7.5K, 5.1K,
3.9K, 1.5K, 1K) at the output and plot the gain as a function of load resistance.
 Comment on your findings.
