Girl (1983) by Jamaica Kincaid

(A Reflection )

* How do you respond to being nagged and lectured? Do you usually accept the advice offered
in such situations? Explain.

To be honest if someone is trying to lecture me or advise me on something that I’m

doing, I’m glad to accept and hear it. For example my parent advise me to forgive those who

back stabbed me even though they are my close cousins, yet it hard for me to do it, because

every time I saw their faces, it reminds me all of the bad things they told about me. In the short

story that I’ve read entitled “Girl 1983” it shows how women should act like a fragile glass, in

short women should act carefully for their safety and for their image to society. There’s nothing

wrong to be corrected by elders, because they gained much knowledge because of their

experiences, and we should be happy to accept those advices for own good. To elaborate, Our

elders have gained so much wisdom in their lives from a lifetime of experience that it’s almost a

crime to not share it with someone younger and I have learned so much from my elders. On the

day that I stop learning or feel I have arrived, then God may be finished with me because we’re

commanded to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord (2nd Pet 3:18) and my mentor has

much more wisdom than I do. Knowledge is not the same thing as wisdom because knowledge

applied rightly makes it wisdom.
