T have previously refrained fron using these pages as a political soapbox, but
with this issue I will start to air my views publically.
Events of the past few weeks have seemed to me to indicate a change in the
attitude of the American people. A swing to the right seems to taking place, Thé
actions of governments both local and national indicate a new intolerance vith
People who do not follow the wishes of the "majority". The "Silent Majority", with
Spiro Agnew as its Un-Silent spokesman, has decided that President Nixon's ac
are not to be questioned, Dissenters, whether violent or non-violent, are to
punished for daring to speak out against the "majority" view. To criticize the
goverment is now taken as action against the principle of that goverment. Thus,
dissenters and protesters of all types are made out to be "Commies", "revolution-
aries*, "anti-American",
This 4s wrong, . Dissent has always been a part of American life. The trouble
is that where once dissent took the form of voting for the "out" political party,
bat now the majority of dissenters 2 barred from voting because they are too young,
or too disillusioned.to believe voting will work because both parties look alikes
What we as Americans should do is look at our system to see if perhaps it can
‘be improved to solve today's problems. What we should not do is stifle dissent cr
condone the use of violence to maintain the status quo. Perhaps the killings at
Kent will wake up America before it has gone too far down the wrong path. I hope
it does. Imch prefer the Ancrican systen to anything elses
