Introduction

As the word suggests, Old English literature is the literature written in the English

language's old version. It consists of poems, proses, riddles, charms, and otherwise sayings.

Moreover, it is a mixture of both secular and Christianity views of life, nature, and morals.

Often there is no clear distinction between the poetry and proses or a clear delineation

between religious and secular poetry. Most of the English words came from the German

languages, such as Saxon, Jutes, and Angles (Williamson, 2017). Additionally, also used
the Latin language. Not all text could fit to be named as literature; instead, there was a need

for a sizeable amount of work could involve. By the end of this old English period, there

was a well-vested literacy language. The essay talks about the old English poetry and prose

with a conclusive opinion on the importance of literature.

Body

Old English Poetry has a wide range of coverage, starting with the long epic heroic

poems. They are based on historic heroic events. They were handed over a generation by

word of mouth, or as many would say orally. Many writings of this time were chronicles,

annals, and historical records. In addition, we also have the Elegiac Poetry, popularly called

Wisdom poems (Fulk, 2013). These ones describe lyrical and Boethian accounts of good

and bad times of life. Old English Poetry again includes the Christian poetry that includes

the poet on Saints' lives, Biblical paraphrases, and Christian poems which are non-

narrative. This field has other poetic forms: riddles, short verses, gnomes, and mnemonic

poems for recalling a long list of names. Anglo-Saxon poetry employs various features such

as similes and metaphors, alliteration, caesura, and elaboration.

Old English Prose is much more survival than poetry. The majority of prose are the

sermons and Latin translations of religious work. There is the secular and Christian prose.

Christian prose is more of instructive and educative. Furthermore, the prose also had

medical information, annals, chronicles, and information on the law. The Old English

Christian Prose text was found in legal text collected and saved by religious houses. These

texts were a donation by nobles wills documents of emancipation, a list of books and relics,
court cases, and finally, guide rules (Williamson, 2017). Secular prose was the like of the

Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, which shared studies of mathematics, rhetoric, and Medical work

was not left out. Prose's main literary styles included homilies, sermons, stories of saints'

lives, and Bible translations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, English literature has considerable importance. It helps preserve and

remind us of our culture through reading through old literature material. Above all, it

improves one's communication skills by studying literature where we read and get to know

new vocabularies plus grammar. Individually, I also think it cultivates wisdom and

worldview. When we study literature, we can gain knowledge and gain discernment. You

can know what is right and wrong and injustice and live in the society knowing challenges

accompanied by vices and virtue we pose. More importantly, literature broadens our

horizons by exposing a wide range of learning material from literature with different

teaching morals. Lastly, it allows a smooth transition of communication among us humans.

We can share ideas and even discuss.
