PREWRITING: WORLD BUILDING

We are beginning work on a larger fiction piece, set in a fictional world of your creation. The first step is to
think about what this world will look like.

Read the following article for some background information on World Building.

The main thing to remember is that you need to create a world that you can let your imagination go WILD with.

Once you’ve chosen your world, you’ll need to build up this world in your imagination. You need to work out what
the place looks like. What do the schools, stores, houses, streets, and recreational places look like? What are the people
like? What sorts of jobs do they have? What do kids do in their spare time, etc.?

To do this, let’s start with brainstorming. You should be able to double click on the boxes below and edit the drawings
to include your text.

PREWRITING II: CREATING A MAP

To get a better idea of what this world is like, create a map of the world, pointing out all the different places of
importance in the world, and drawing what they look like. Then write an explanation of the different places you have
placed on the map. You can draw this map digitally, or draw a paper/pencil version and insert a picture.
EXPLAINING MY MAP

Describe what this map includes, important locations, or anything else you think I should know!
