I have been making bullet swaging dies now far some thirty years
and since I prebably do not have to many years left I felt thet 1
should try and pass on some of the knewledge that 1 have gained
on the subject. Thus I have writteng this little booklet.
In the early editions 1 described thrae systems which T labeled
System I, If and III. The first tuo systems were concerned with
making dies for a standard reloading press and System 111 told
how to make swage dies for the Mity-y Nite Bullet Swage Frese
whicn To make nere in my chop. in a very short tim
there was just ne interest in the first two systems. T feo1 that
this was caused by the great number of parts that had te be
machined, special tooling necessary and this added te the
Simpliciy Of making dies for the MH coupled wit
which 1 offer the press for sale. Thus T only now offer the book
for those interested in making dies for the H-M press. If anyone
Sid with to make dies fer a standard press the information
contained in this bocklet would be invaluable.
In its present form the guide congints of around twenty pages
printed on perforated note book type paper so that it can be
inserted into a thre: hole binder. The note back gs not
furnished because of the cest of packaging aad shipping. They
are of course common items around most househelds or readily
available in stores at @ very low price
The book contains detailed information! on every process of
making bullet swage dies including such subjects au driling,
easing, honing, lapping, milling end se forth, [¢ goes into
detail on making ones coun reamers, buliet ge
compounds and so forth. Approximately one third of the gages are
working drawings from uhich parts can be made. Feeling that
in some instances the customer might wish to purchase parte
rather. than ta machine them I have included a lige
available. (An examsle of this might he the too! steal necessary
to make the dies which is not nermaily available in small
qusnities. On most of these my prices are very near my cost.

purchase one tho many might already have them, 1 therafare am

THE CORE SWABE DIE 1S JUST WHAT THE NAME IMPLIES. IT IS @ DIE WHICH
18 USED TD SWAGE CORES. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS DIE IS TO MAKE
ALL CURES UNIFORM AS TO WEIGHT AND SHAPE. IT ALSO ELIMINATES AIR
WHICH MIGHT MAVE REEN INDUCED DURING CASTINGS. THIS DIF IS GFTEN RE-
FERRED TO AS A’ BLEED DIE IN THAT DURING THE SWAGING OPERATION LEAD
BLEEDS OFF THRU THE BLEED HOLES SHOWN AS D IN THE PICTURE, IT 18
ALSO OFTEN CALLED @ SQUIRT DIE BECAUSE THE LEAD SQUIRTS QUT THRU
THE BLEED APRATURE, +
THE CORE SWAGE DIE IS MADE EXECTLY LIKE THE CORE SEATING DIE HOW-
EVER THERE ARE @ FEW THINGS WHICH MUST BE CONSIDERED IN MAKING THIS
DIE. IN THE DRAWING SECTION A REPRESENTS THE LENGTH OF THE DIE.
E18 THE TO# PUNCH AND F THE BOTTOM PUNCH. B REPRESENTS THE CORE.
SECTION C OF THE BOTTOM PUNCH WOULD OF COURSE BE EQUAL TO THE
LENGTH OF THE DIE. ,
D IS THE BLEED HOLE. USUALLY THE DIE MAKER WILL DRILL THREE HOLES IN
THE CURE SWASE DIE WHICH ARE EQUALLY SPACED AROUND THE DIR, @ 1/16
INCH DRILL SEEMS TO BE THE MOST POPULAR THO THIS TS NOT REALLY
CRITICAL THEY SHOULD BE SMALL. THE PLACING OF THESE HOLES IG
IMPORTANT BECAUSE DURING SWAGING THE HULES MUST BE WITHIN THE SPACE
WHICH WILL BE OCCUPIED DY THE LEAD CORE B. ALSO THESE APRATURES MUST
BE ABOVE THE THREADS. iF HOLE D IS TO HIGH ON THE DIE THEN PUNCH &
MIGHT PASS THE MOLE DURING SWAGING AND THUS SEAL IT OFF.
THE EXACT AERIA WHERE THE CORE WILL BE WITHIN THE DIE DURING SWAGING
IS DETERMINED BY THE BOTTOM PUNCH. PLEASE REFER TO THE DRAWING ON
PUNCHES WHICH ARE LISTED AS X,¥ AND Z. Z IS THE BOTTOM PUNCH AND THE
LENGTH OF SECTION B DETERMINES JUST HOW FAR BACK IN THE DIE AERIA
€ WILL RECEFDF. THUS FOR A HEAVIER CORE YOU! MIGHT MAKE SECTICN B (FUNCH
DRAWING) SHORTER AND VICE VERSA,
THERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN MAKING UP CORE SWAGE DIES.
1 LIKE TO USE A 1-5/8 INCH LENSTH EVEN THO IT MIGHT NOT BE NECESGARY
WHEN MAKING UP FOR SMALL CALIBERS. A LONGER DIE ALLOWS THE FUNCH
7G ENTER THE DIE AND ALIGN ITSELF BEFORE THE SWAGING OPERATION REALLY
BEGINS, THIS IS ALSU A FACTOR TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING POINT FORMING
DIES. THE CORE SWAGE DIE MUST HAVE AN EXCELLENT SURFACE FINISH OR
THE CORES WILL BE HARD TO EJECT AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY TAPER FOR
THE Same REASON. THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF THE DIE MUST BE LARGE ENOUGH
10 ACCEPT THE CORE YOU PLAN ON USING BUT IT MUST @LSO BE SMELL
ENOUGH SO THAT THE SUAGED CORE WILL GU INTO THE JACKET. AGAIN REMEMBER
THAT SOME JACKETS ARE TAPERED THUS SMALLER AT THE BASE THAN THEY ARE
IN THE MOUTH,
IT USUALLY PUT A SMALL CAVITY IN THE END GF THE BOTTOM PUNCH. I JUST
USE A DRILL WHICH IS SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE PUNCH, THIS WILL CAUSE
TRE CORES TO HAVE ONE ROUND END, THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS 18 THAT
UNDER PRESSURE THE END OF THE PUNCH WILL EXPAND OUT TO THE DIE AND
MAKE A BOOD SEAL, ALGO IF THE PUNCH WEARS SIZE WILL BE MAINTAINED.
BOTH PUNCHES MUST BE A GOOD FIT IN THE DIE OR ELSE LEAD WILL BLEED
AROUND THE PUNCH AND CAUSE RAD FINS ON THE END OF THE LEAD.
USUALLY I MAKE A 22 CAL. CORE SWAGE G0 IT EJECTS a .190 INCH CORE.
THIS SAME CORE DIAMETER 1S ABOUT RIGHT FOR THE .243. IT MAY BE NECESSARY
TO SHORTEN SECTION B, PUNCH Z IN THE DRAWING ON PUNCHES IN ORDER
FOR THE PUNCH AND DIF TO ACCOMODATE THE .743 CORE. FOR THE 30 CAL.
T MAKE MY CORE SWAGE DIES .252“PUNCHES:
THERE ARE ONLY FOUR PUNCHES NECESSARY TO MAKING A SET OF DIES FOR
THE MITY-MITE PRESS. THE PRINT AT THE LEFT SHOWS ONLY THREE OF THESE
THE REASON BEING THAT THO OF THEM ARE IDENTICAL WITH EXCEPTION OF THE
DIAMETER,
THE PUNCHES @RE LISTED AS ¥, Y, 2. 1 USUALLY REFER TO THESE aS BEING
EITHER TOP OR BOTTOM PUNCHES. THE TOP PUNCHES ARE USED IN THE PUNCH
HOLDER WHICH IN TURN 15 SCREWED INTO THE THREADED SECTION OF THE PRESS.
JHE BOTTOM PUNCHES FIT INTO THE DIES WHICH IN TURN ARE SCREWED INTO
THE Ran.
THE PUNCH SHOWN AS X IS 4 TOP PUNCH AND AS NOTED BOTH TOP PUNCHES
ARE NEAR IDENTICAL. 2 MAKE THESE PUNCHES UP IN HAT 1 CALL BLANKS. A
BLANK CAN THEN BE USED 70 MAKE ANY TOP PUNCH. TO HAKE 8 BLANK GF
PUNCH X I START OFF WITH STRESS PROOF MATERIAL WHICH IS 7/16 IN DIA-
METER, I CUT THE MATERIAL TO AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 2-1/4 IN, I LEAVE
SECTION A AT FULL DIAMETER. I THEN TURN SECTION WHICH INCLUDES B
AND T TO .350. THIG THEN BECOMES A BLANK WHICH CAN BE USED FOR
ALL CALIBERS WHICH GRE UNDER .350, OR PUT ANCTHER WAY EVERYTING UP
TO @ MM. THE «350 IS NOT A CRITICAL DIAMETER, 37 COULD BE MADE PLUS
QR MINUS TEN THOUSGNDTHS. IN USE THIS DIAMETER PASSES THRU THE
BUSHING WHICH HOLDS 27 IN THE PUNCH HOLDER AND IT NEEDS 70 BE
MADE ENOUGH UNDER SIZE TO FLOAT IN THE BUSHING, WHICH THEN ACCOUNTS
FOR THE SAYING "FLOATING, SELF ALIGNING PUNCHES’.
IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO MakE A TOP PUNCH FOR YOUR CORE SEATING AND
POINT FORMING DIES AND ALSO ANY OTHER DYES SUCH AS CURE SWAGE DIES.
IN USE THE TOP PUNCH IS THE PUNCH WHICH PUSHES THE COMPONENTS INTO
THE DIES. THE BOTTOM PUNCHES ACT AS EJECTORS.
SECTION C WILL BE TURNED ACCORDINS TO THE USE FOR WHICH IT IS
INTENDED. 3 TURN SEGTION C 1 IN, LONG ON ALL PUNCHES THO AGAIN THIS
IS NOT CRITICAL. IN THE FUTURE 7 WILL REFER TO THE INSIDE DIAMETER
AS THE ID AND FHE OUTSIDE DIAMETER AS THE OD. WHEN MAKING UP CORE
SEATING PUNCHES THE OD OF THE PUNCH WILL Be A GOOD Fil FOR THE ID
OF THE JACKET BEING USED. THIS WILL ELIMINATE EXTRUSION OF LEAD
AROUND THE PUNCH DURING CORE SEATING BUT THE OD G= THE PUNCH MUST
BE SMALL ENGUGH SD THAT IT WILL ENTER TQ THE DEPTH NECESSARY WITHOUT
DAMAGE TO THE ID OF THE gackeT.
FOR THE TOP PUNCH TO BE USED WITH THE POINT FORMING DIES DIAMETER &
WILL BE AS GOOD A FIT INTO THE POINT FORMING DIE AS YOU WISH TO
MAKE IT. I NORMALLY TRY TO MAKE DIAMETER & ABOUT .O01 UNDER BULLET
DIAMETER. THE END AT & MUST BE FLAT AND PERPENDICULAR TO THE AXIS
OF THE PUNCH. THIS TS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
Y AND 7 @RE BOTTOM PUNCHES. Y IS THE TYPE USED IN POINT FORMING DIES
WHICH HAVE 6 POINT SUCH AS & SPITZER BULLET. IF vou ARE SETTING UP
TO MAKE THESE PUNCHES AGAIN IT 1S WELL TD MAKE THEM UP AS BLANKS.
J MAKE THESE BLANKS 2 INCHES QVERALL LENGTH WITH SLOT 8 ABOUT MID
WAY, SLOT IS MILLED i/4 INCH WIDE AND ABOUT 3/16 INCH DEEP. AGAIN
THIS IS NOT CRITICAL. END AT TOP SHOULD HAVE A SLIGHT RADIUS SO
IT WILL FLOAT IN THE RAM, THE DIAMETER OF THIS PUNCH IS 1/4 INCH.
SECTION E IS THE PIN PUNCH. THIS PUNCH MUST BE MADE FROM SPRING
STEEL AND BE A GUDD FIT FOR THE HOLE DRILLED IN THE POINT FORMING
DIE. THIS SPRING STEEL 15 VERY INEXPENSIVE AND I SUBGEST THAT YOU
ORCER THIS MATERIAL FRCM ME UN.ESS OTHERWISE AVAILABLE.F

< CO a“THE FOINT FORMING DIE
OF ALL THE DIES YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE POINT FORMING DIE 1S
WITHOUT BOUBT THE STINKER IN THE WOCODPILE IF FOR NU OTHER REASON
THAN THE FACT THAT IT GIVES THE FINAL SHAPE AND THUS THE FINAL
APPEARENCE TO THE FINISHED PRODUCT, THE BULLET. THERE 1S ALGO THE
THE PROBLEM THAT THE CORE SEATED JACKET IS FORCED INTO THE POINT
FORMING DIE UNDER CONSIDERSBLe PRESSSURE AND MUST BE EJECTED FROM
THE DIE WITH 4€ VERY SMALL PIN PUNCH. IF THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE
POINT FORMING DIE IS THE LEAST BIT ROUGH THEN YOU ARE ALMOST CERTAIN
10 EXPERIENCE EJECTION PROBLEMS.
USUBLLY THE POINT FORMING DIE 18 STEP DRILLED. BY THIS I MEAN
YOU CAN USE DRILLS SO 4S TO ROUGH OUT ALL MATERIAL POSSIBLE BEFORE
REAMING. I USE 3/4 INCH STOCK FOR ALL MY DIES. THE RAM OF THE mM
PRESS IS THREADED FOR A 5/8 X 24 THREAD SO NO STOCK SMALLER THAN
3/8 INCHES CAN BE USED. IT 1S NOT NECESSARY TO RELIEVE THE TOP
OF THE THREADS AS THERE IS A RELIEF IN THE MOUTH OF THE RAM.
WHEN MAKING PARTS WHICH MUST BE HARDENED IT IS WELL TO ELIMINATE AS
FAR AS POSSIELE ANY UNNECESSARY CUTS SUCH AS A THREAD RELIEF.
t WOULD RECOMEND THAT YOU FIND A PIECE OF SOFT STEEL SUCH AS A
FREE MACHINING STEEL AND EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR DRILLING AND REAMING.
IF YOU DO NOT SEEM 70 BE HAVING SUCESS WITH THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL, IT
Ts CERTAIN THAT YOU WILL HAVE GREATER PROBLEMS WiTH ANY TYFE OF
TOOL STEEL. GENERALLY ONE CAN CONSULT @ CHART ON THE MACHINASILITY UF &
STEEL AND DETERMINE JUST HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO PREFORM ANY TYPE OF
MACHINING OFERATION. IF YOU FEEL THE LE@ST BIT OF CHATTER AG THE
HALF REAMER IG CUTTING THE CAVITY YOU WILL HAVE TO ELIMINATE THIS
PROBLEM BEFURE YOU ARE GOING TU HAVE ANY SUCCESS, IT IS A GOOD
iDEA TO CUT THE REANED DIE IN HALF TF POSSIBLE aND EXAMINE THE
MILLED SURFACE FOR ABRASIONS. THESE CAN BE CAUSED BY A STEP DRILL OR
BY THE HALF REAMER. YOU MIGHT AS WELL ELIMINATE THESE BEFORE YOU
WASTE ANY EXPENSIVE TOOL STEEL BECAUSE THEY WILL GET WORSE, NOT RETTER.
IN ANOTHER FART I SUGGESTED THAT I ONLY USE TWO LENGTNS OF DIES
WHICH WERE 1-5/@ AND 1-7/8 INCH IN LENGTH. YOU MUST REAM AT LEAST
ONE AND A HALF TIMES THE LENGTH OF THE BULLET @ND YOU NEED AT
LEAST 1/4 INCH OF SECTION FOR THE EJECTOR PIN, SHOWN AS N ON THE
DRAWING. THUS IF UNE WERE USING & 1 INCH LONG JACKET THE POINT CAVITY
SHOULD BE RE@MED 1-1/2 PLUS 1/78 INCH AND STILL HAVE 1/4 FOR THE
EJECTION PIN, THE MOUTH OF THE DIE SHOULD BE CHAMPHERED TO GUIDE
THE PUNCH INTO THE DIE.
I USE THE 1-S/@ INCH DIES FOR THE 22, 243 @ND ALL CORE SEATING
DIeS. T USE THE 1-7/8 INCH FOR ALL LARGER FOINT FORMING DIES. YOU
WILL FIND THAT THIS CAUSES SOME WASTE HOWEVER IT DOES ELIMINATE HEL
TO STANDARDIZE THE DIES AND AT THE SAME TIME PUNCH LENGTH.
1 HIGHLY RECOMEND THE USE GF GRAPH-MD FOR MAKING THESE DIES BECAUSE
THE MACHINIST JS GOING TO HAVE ENOUGH PROELENS MAKING HIS FIRST
SET OF DIES WITHOUT BORROWING ANY. GRAPH-MG AS SUGGESTED RY THE
NAME IS A GRAPHIC STEELL WHICH IS EXCELLENT FOR THIS PURPOSE. IT °
REACTS WELL TO HEAT TREATMENT AND TT IS NOT A CRITICAL STEEL. YOU
WILL EXPERIENCE VERY LITTLE WAAPAGE WHEN USING GRAPH-NO.
