“The history of Yugoslavia”

1.     The region which became Yugoslavia was once owned by which two great empires in
the 19th century?  

Yes, The Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

2.     What was the name of this region? What does this name mean?

The Balkan peninsula. This means “mountain” in Turkish language. 

3.     What provoked the wave of Balkan wars of independence that began in 1912?

The weakness that the Balkan people thought the ottoman empire had. 

4.     Did the Balkan states remain allied in their cause?

No, because Serbia turned against Bulgaria, their ally.

5.     What was Austria-Hungary’s reaction to these wars? What was the result?

Austro-Hungary sent archduke Franz Ferdinand, to the south, in order to promote


the slaves against the Serbian expansion. The archduke was murdered and this was a
bigging factor of world war one.

6.     What redrew the borders of the Balkans after World War I?

After World War One, around 32 countries signed the treaty of Versailles. This
redrew the borders of Balkans and promoted peace. 

7.     Which ethnicity dominated the newly created state of Yugoslavia? 

Serbia.

8.     What happened to Yugoslavia in 1941?

Germany invaded it and it lasted 11 days. Yugoslavia gave up. 


9.     Was Yugoslavia united in its resistance to the Germans?

No, because Germany decided that Croatia (one of the countries that belongs to
Yugoslavia) will become an independent state, but because other partisan factions that
were rivals fought against Germany.

10.  How did Yugoslavia emerge from the war, and how did it differ from the Yugoslavia of
1920?

They changed from a dominated monarchy to a socialist state. 

11.  What factors contributed to the dissolution of Tito’s Yugoslavia?

The main factors were: the death of Tito (former president of Yugoslavia),
economic inequality, high amount of debt in the country, etc.

12. What was the term “ethnic cleansing” coined to describe?

It was the plan of Bosnian Serbians to send Bosnian muslims to concentration


camaps. 

13.  What finally brought an end to the war in Bosnia, and how?

The United States created a treaty called "The Dayton treaded" which ended the war by
creating two autonomous entities in Bosnia.

14. What prompted NATO to launch the first airstrikes on European soil since World War II?

Serbian resistance to Kosovo's  independence. 

15. What was the ultimate fate of Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic?

He lost the election, and was as a result expelled from office thanks to protests organized
by citizens. As his final destination, he was tried for crimes against humanity and
genocide.

16. Does Yugoslavia exist anymore?

No, all the countries proclaimed independence until yugoslavia no longer


existed.
