LESSON 10: SAMR MODEL

ENGAGE

Conduct interviews with three teachers, preferably in different levels of the


education system. Ask the following questions.

1. Were they any lesson which was previously taught by the teacher using
traditional instructional materials are now taught using technology> How is this
done by the teachers?

2. What are the usual technological tools that are used by the teachers?

REPORT

I conducted my interview by using a messenger as a means to send questions


pertaining to their way of instruction. I chose three teacher to be interview; Ms.
Giray, Ms. Cuanico and Mr. Delorino, all of whom currently teach at Catarman
National High School. There are two questions that have been inquired which are; 1.
Were there any lesson which was previously taught by the teacher using traditional
instructional materials are now taught using technology? How is this done by the
teacher? 2. What are the usual technological tools that are used by the teacher?.
After that I summarized all of their responses as I observed that they have
almost the same answers. In the first question, they answered that when
presenting topics/concepts in their respective subjects, they usually uses now a
laptop, projector and powerpoint presentation as a method of their instruction
instead of using traditional materials like blackboard and chalks. They also use
video presentations and give interactive activities that incorporates technology in
order for the students to be more engaged in their discussions as well as to
increase their interest towards learning in their subject. With regards to the
second question, the common technological tools that they uses in their 21 st
century teaching are Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint, google docs, zoom,
youtube, internet, educational mobile apps like geogebra, internet, computers and
projectors which are useful in creating a good technological learning environment
that is correlated in enhancing the learning experience of the students.

Answer the following questions briefly but substantively

1. What is SAMR?

It is a model created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura which provides a framework


to show the impact of technology on teaching and learning. The model moves
through various stages, beginning at a basic level of learning in the substitution
phase through to a level where learning is transformational at the redefinition
level. It essentially a planning tool that helps teachers to design better learning
activities for students and provides pedagogical insight into how technology can
and should be used in the classroom.

2. Explain the stages of SAMR framework and the interrelationship between


these domains.

There are 4 stages in SAMR model namely; Substitution, Augmentation,


Modification and Redefinition where the use of educational technology becomes
increasingly sophisticated. Substitution is the simplest stage, where technology is
used as a direct substitute for traditional practices. At the augmentation stage,
technology adds something to the learning process beyond just convenience. While
in modification stage, technology is used to design interactive and dynamic tasks
that go beyond the limitations of a traditional classroom. And lastly, the most
sophisticated stage of SAMR which is redefinition, is the stage where technology
is used to create tasks/activities which were previously and inconceivable within
traditional classroom. It allows us to reimage and revitalize bathe learning process
in the classroom. Furthermore, substitution and augmentation stages used
technology to enhance learning and value, whereas modification and redefinition
stages harness technology to transform learning and make things possible.

3. Do you agree that Modification and Redefinition will always be better than
Substitution and Augmentation stages?

I think yes because modification and redefinition stages can more


aggrandize the learning experiences of the students as we can transform their
learning by enabling activities that were previously impossible in the classroom.
Modifying and redefining the way we teach/learn is the most effective way where
we can manifest and reap the benefits of technology integration in the educational
context and it helps us build higher order thinking skills.

SAMR MODEL

Lesson: Linear equation and its slope-intercept form

Learning Competencies:

 Illustrate the slope of a line


 Graph a linear equation given its slope-intercept form
 Find the slope of a line given two points, equation and graph

Substitution: A motivational activity will be initiated by the teacher which deals in


identifying the slope and y-intercept of a line. The teacher will flash examples of
graphs of lines using the PPT then the students should tell the slope and y-
intercept of each lines as shown on each graph.

Augmentation: The teacher will direct students to access Desmos Lab in the
internet in which they will be using Desmos, a free online graphing calculator that
allows learners to manipulate linear equations and represent them visually.
Modification: The students will be involved in the online game “Marbleslides: Lines”
from a website wherein this interactive activity will ask students to manipulate a
series of linear equations and they will also be introduced to creating restrictions
on a line to make it start or stop at a given point on a graph.

Redefinition: The students will be working in pairs in making a video tutorial that
deals with graphing equation of a line in slope-intercept form with consideration on
the use of Desmos Graphing Calculator.
